This is very sad. The worst part is that it may have been avoided had she been wearing a helmet.
As a fellow rider I would not mind if there was a helmet law here on the island. without a helmet even a small"fender bender"can be fatal. and there is NO BS I would buy about it being safer without one( i can see, hear better without one....blah blah blah).
Sad for the family ....turning a vacation into a funeral.

So well put. I am a personal friend of this woman, Melissa who just turned 53 in July not 54. She was a beautiful creative spirit. An wonderful mother, wife, and friend. She had an amazing life and lucrative business that she created in the difficult world of Los Angeles. Everyone that knows her is devastated and most heartbreaking is that she leaves behind her young daughter who she lived for. Knowing her as I did for many, many years I am at a loss to understand why she took off her helmet for this part of their day trip. I guess the sense of safety on the beautiful roads of Maui compared to LA just hypnotized her into a deadly decision. She remains in the hearts of all that knew her. Thank you for your thoughtful comments.
