Church of God Universal is a Cult

I am truly dismayed about the comments I just read regarding the church in Hagerstown, MD. First of all not one red cent is received from the State of Maryland. 100% of the donations come from members of the church. My father is the pastor of the church. His wife actually works at the school. Most of the teachers are married. I live in FL but I always go to church when I visit home. I am welcomed with open arms. No pressure no preaching just welcomed. My father is the most decent kind man I have ever known. He is fair and only gives his opinion when asked. I could not have asked for a better father while growing up. The comments about the church on this site really hurt me because I know they are unfair and untrue.

Pastor Craig (that your referred to) has been the pastor of our church since the middle 1970's. He has a spotless reputation! He preaches straight from the Bible & challenges us to read the scriptures for ourselves to see if he's preaching the truth (which he is)! So there is no reason to "run for your life" as you said in your posting! There are no "bad" people in our church or school - so there's no need to "avoid" any of us as was mentioned above. We are all very loving caring people who enjoy going to church & enjoy serving the Lord! You are not (& never have been) required to get up at 5 am & pray an hour before breakfast at our campmeetings - that is a choice - not a requirement. We do not receive funds or need approval from the state or school board since we are a private school funded by tuition & offerings from our church. Please do not make statements when you don't know what you're talking about. We have all made mistakes in our life - hopefully we've learned from them & are better people today because of what life has taught us. I attended that school from K thru 9th grade - as stated above I too got an excellent education & I was never mistreated. I pray God richly blesses each person writing or reading this website as we all need each others prayers to live a good Christian life.
How Christian of you to tell me "do not make statements when you don't know what you are talking about". Weren't you taught to tolerate others and not force your beliefs on them? Remember, I WAS THERE, too! I DO know what went on THEN! I'm GLAD to hear things have changed, but I MUST disagree with your statements and using words like "NEVER HAVE BEEN REQUIRED" when discussing what someone else experienced FIRST-HAND!

Sharon - you know me. I'd been to your house in Hagerstown many times. Your mother even made us matching dresses. If you read what I wrote, All I said about your father was that he knew me. Can you actually say that Sister Alice NEVER took any of us to the small kitchen after school for a spanking? I did NOT say that the school got funds from the State - I said I thought it was a possibility. Your father was NOT in charge when we were young. REV. Marquiss was. Things WERE difficult back then. Remember Bro. Donnie? Well, Sis.Lucille walked in when he was trying to assault me in the livingroom while Sis. Blanche was baking bread in the kitchen! Those are the days I remember. How about Jimmy J commiting suicide? I'm glad your father has turned the Church into something good - BUT I will ALWAYS have a bad taste in my mouth for the 50's/60's at Truth For Youth.

I knew Jimmy & his older sister. They were brought to Hag. by their father after their mother was committed to a mental institution in Texas. He went into the service & had a hard time adjusting. The army gave him medication but he still could not adjust. They had him in a hospital for a long time then finally discharged him for medical reasons. He didn't continue to take his medication. His suicide had nothing to do with that school. Unfortunately it was a sickness he inherited from his mother. Sadly this is what happens to thousands of mentally ill people every year. They don't stay on their medication, they get depressed, they figure the easiest way out is to end their life. Sarah's niece should look at the example of Jesus - everywhere He went, He did good yet people tried to kill Him. Finally they hung Him on the cross after almost beating Him to death. Yet He said, "Father forgive them for they know not what they do". I choose to live in the present, count my many blessings & look forward to the future.

I also attended 'The Truth for Youth School. I know there were a lot of things that went on back then but thanks to God - he has given the leaders a new direction. Many women died in childbirth because they were not allowed to go to the doctors. I am happy to see this change - but I also am concerned that parents who left their children die are now going to doctors. I myself could not do this if only by principal. Truly, I know I am being judgmental and I do pray for forgiveness. I watch the services on my computer on Sunday and find them uplifting. I do feel Pastor Craig is misled when it comes to women's hair and dress. The bible says:'A woman's hair is her glory'. It does not say that you can not cut or trim your hair. If this was the case - then the men should be dressed in beards and robes. They look pretty spiffy in church. I know there are many good christian's out there who would like to go to this church but do not because of this standard. I feel we should continue to pray for Pastor Craig. Just as God showed the leaders that it was not a sin to go to the doctor - he can also intervene in this matter. Being like God is not in outward appearances but what is in your heart. I rejoice daily that I am born again and I am a child of God.
I am praying for the day I can worship and be accepted as a saint of God within the church. Until then, I will read my bible and pray for that day to come.

Lively discussion there. I believe that the Church is doing what other churches are not brave enough to do - the unbiased Word of God and many folks could be challenged by that.
For thr Church: continue doing what you are doing - even Christ had opposition!!

I have tried to read all the comments posted here with an open mind and an open heart. I was brought up in this church my whole life and attend there today. I have seen changes over the years for the better, I am not saying that things weren't done wrong years ago. But in the end we are all responsible for ourselves not what others have done. I am proud of my daddy and his leadership through his years as pastor, and I thank God for my Christian upbringing. I pray Gods blessings on all of you as some of you seems to be struggling and we are taught to pray one for another.

We are responsible for ourselves BUT no one has ever been held responsible for the past, or acknowledged or apologized for it! And the whole idea that God will punish them in the afterlife just isn't enough for some of us!

Sorry but the past affects people everyday for the worse or for the better-Jesus took the beatings-the children should not had to endure-and I am not talking about the mere spankings that we as adults still may administer to a child-I'm talking beatings!-If you missed out on these-you were one of the lucky ones!

this Church of God is not associated with the Denominational Church of God- they so named the church because they believed a church shouldn't have a name, other to identify itself as "A" church of God himself. And yes this particular one was a Cult in the 50's, 60's and early 70's!

they be doing today what they should have been doing in the 50's,60's and early 70's-they were definitely a cult then! Change may have occurred but the damages still continue!

Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:

Need to let go of some bitterness Ms Shelton - bitterness is a difficult thing all of us have to face in some area of our lives

U an new ti Hagerstown and considering sending my kids to truth academy. I saw some small discussion on the school, but the discussion is a few years old. Has anyone had any recent business with the school and do you recommend it?

I would recommend the school to you. My children have gone there for several years. The principal could teach in a university if she chose to - she has chosen to instead dedicate her time to the school - and many of the teachers are excellent.
