More and more I see people running, walking, bicycling, etc on the street rather than available sidewalks. Its annoying to drivers but more than that it is dangerous for both the driver and the sidewalk hater.

Unless I am sadly mistaken it is illegal to ride a bike on the sidewalk in most cities and towns. Drivers need to slow down and kids need to ride smart.

Okay Lets look at this a minute. It is a double efged sword. Drivers need to be more aware of their surroundings and this would increase if they slowed down. However, Pedestrians and Pedacyclist need to remember that they too have responsibility. I have seen numerous pedestrians just walk into the crosswalk and expect the traffic to stop. The law states that you must yield to a pedestrian within a crosswalk. Not stop to let them enter and cross (unless a pedestrian crossing control is in place.) And it also states that a pedestrian must not enter the street unless the way is clear. Lets show some respect both ways.
Why anyone wants to run into the street to see if the traffic will stop, is totally idiotic.
Bicyclist do ride on the roadway not the sidewalks, however they must also follow the rules of the road, as a vehicle such. Lets all be more considerate and observant.

Plus you have to ask why a 10 year old was riding a bike in the steet? Where the hell was his parents? Hmmm? Wait its Waynesboro, Parden my comments. I used to live in waynesboro and I saw how some parents watch their kids....open the doors and let them run out and only look for them when they hear crying....you know who you are..Watch out near Franklin and North Street. Near a grey and white house with trash all around....that speaks for its self.

That's it, we have to ban bicycles. Just like everything else in this country that hurts one person at any given time.
Ban everything.
(by the way, riding a bike on the sidewalk is illegal)

I agree with no parents. When I lived in Waynesboro I saw all the time our neighbor open the door and the little kids run out on the sidewalk and go up the street and about an hour later their parent or grandparent would come out of the house screaming their name at the top of their lungs looking for them! And if something had happened to them God forbid it would be who can we sue time!!! Slow down on West Fourth Street!

Let's face it, the kids on bikes today ride where they want, don't stop at stop signs/lights, and travel any direction on the streets and sidewalks. Bike riders and car drivers share the responsibility to keep things safe.

When I read of this tragic accident I am reminded of the Pennsylvanian bias towards automobiles. To often we ignore that bicycles are legally 'vehicles' in Pennsylvania with full rights to use the roadway. I see the bias in the article: "bike collided with a van" and "boy riding a bike was injured after colliding with a pickup truck". Blaming the victim! The pickup driver failed his legal duty to drive safe *and* slow enough to avoid hitting bicyclists. Car bias also in the comments: "bicycling, etc on the street rather than available sidewalks." Certainly! Bicyclist have the full legal right to use the street. If only Pennsylvania drivers read (and followed) the law. Section 3501(a) "Chapter 35, Subchapter A, Section 3501.(a)-- Every person riding a pedalcycle upon a roadway shall be granted all of the rights and shall be subject to all of the duties applicable to the driver of a vehicle."
