how did animal control know it has rabies? the only way to tell is to have brain matter tested. if they say otherwise, they are not telling the truth.(ask your veternarian). you cannot tell an animal has rabies just by looking at it. raccoons also get canine distemper, just like dogs, and they behave the same way with distemper as with rabies. and humans cannot get canine distemper.
nobody should be going near wild animals, but you should not worry about the raccoons. make sure your trash cans have tight lids on them, and do not leave food or trash around for them to get at, and they will not come to your house.
