Mariona s cigarette-tax exemption, border-city status has some fuming

Full story: Arkansas Online

Cigarettes are a lot more expensive for Arkansans since the 56-cent-per-pack state tobacco tax increase became law in March, except for residents of border cities like Texarkana and Fort Smith , whose residents pay the tax rate of the neighboring states under Arkansasa TM border-city exemption law.

This tax is a rip off of the people who the government has allowed to become addicted to a legal drug. It is known that nicotine is one of the most addicting drugs ever. The President says, that this an attempt to get people to stop smoking. I can't see it happening. I think that it will only force people to turn to a lesser quality and cheaper cigarette. The revenues will shift from the major brands to the minor brands. People are not going to stop smoking no matter how high the prices go. We are addicted!!! I only see it taking more of our money that is needed for our children away.
What a government, get us addicted and then gouge us for more money knowing darn well that we will spend it to support our addiction. Just ban the sell of cigarettes altogether. If they don't want us smoking, then they shouldn't allow us to buy them. Don't make sense to me.

Looks like you blame everyone but yourself for being addicted. So take credit for it, quit looking at yourself as a victim, and develope a plan to quit.
That's what I did 20 years ago.

Might have been easy for you, but not for others. I am not blaming anyone for my addiction, but the government should not be capitalizing on the fact that so many are addicted. They are no better than a drug dealer. They are just doing it legally.

You are totally right the Goverment should not be getting richer off of us smokers! It would be different if the Country's ability to function depended on our money to function but they take our money and give it away to Companys that has made bad decisions! But Doctors have been capitalizing on people's addiction to Prescription drugs for years!
