The so-called Ramapough Lenape Indian Nation exists only in the minds of casino promoters and some poor folks who live along the Ramapo ridge in northern New Jersey and southeastern New York. These "Ramapoughs" do not have federal tribal status, despite attempts to attain it. Up until a few decades ago, they claimed to be descended from Tuscaroras, who were just passing through in the early eighteenth century. Now they claim Lenape descent. Whatever it takes to build that casino on Stag Hill.
