You make a good point. Columbus is part of Luna county but the LCSO did not treat Columbus like it was in the past. With 30 people on pay role they could not send one man for back up when they were asked to do so. Where were they when all this stuff was happening in Columbus? The new mayor is looking to make ends meet a task she is equal to, how ever part of the financil problems the village of Columbus is suffering is also in part what the LCSO did to the department when there were honest people in the force, who truly had a heart to serve the people of Columbus. Think about the actions of the LCSO and their roots and ties with Espinosa. These people go back a long way. Columbus has a deep hole to dig out of, with good leadership skills and the support of the village they can make it happen. The LCSO will not relinquish the territory they claims and it will be a fight to ever get your own force back. If they do give it back it will be because it will make them appear good. It will happen around election time. Their personal anger issues towards the men who at one time worked for them and went to work in the Columbus department is more than evident in thier lack of support and actions for any one with common sense to see. There are two sides to every story. It took two to make the mess in Columbus.
As it happens after every election there is always a big turn over in staff. It happens everywhere. I see some of the points you have made, but in all fairness, I believe the root of all evil was in your previous mayor. He may have had good intentions when he first started out but it collapsed in his face almost just as soon as he started; many changes in your police force just to name one. I believe the LCSO had many problems with him and saw what was happening; a lot of unscrupulous. Maybe Sheriff Cobos has had trouble with leadership skills but I think he had good intentions to help out the people of Columbus. Columbus needs a new start and your new mayor and the LCSO need a chance to make that happen. Yes Columbus is half an hour away, but a Sheriffs dept. can make arrangements to put in shifts for deputy's to be available. And when the time comes for Columbus to have their police force back, then that is up to your mayor and not the Sheriff.

Funny comment. The truth is they will have help living in the village and the reserve men will be working regular shifts. Now that they are the head hanchos and don't have to answer to any other departments wishes. You will have the presence of a police force 24-7. Mayor Lawson could do a back ground check on the people who will be protecting her town. If they have credit problems, DWI, domestic disputs, don't pay rent on time , default on vehicle payments, don't pay student loans, don't pay child support and have no formal police academy certifications request the LCSO give you men and women with intergrity and high standards. Your community needs to set the bar higher and should be served by those with your standards.

Don't worry Scammy's got his own problems at Columbus Elementary School. Word is he is accused of getting a little rough with a student. Don't know how it has played out ask the Superintendent or Principal Hector Madrid. As for the ex- cops from Columbus they were useless. The Chief you could'nt trust, Flores spent more time at the local grocery store then on the street and Rosemary would go with what ever benefitted her.

I really do not think NICOLE is doing right for the village, having volunteers mess with documents and other things in the office if she was so interested in the village then she should have paid employees look for what ever documents that she needs to look for so they do not get lost, misplaced or mishandled.

Good intentions are just that good intentions. They are best demonstrated by actions. Good intentions Do not save lives , good intentions do not protect people from corruption. Good intentions must be acted on to have any real value.
God has seen fit to give the LCSO grace once again so perhaps they can prove themselves this time and do the work they are paid to do. I believe there is also a root of evil in the LCSO they were not a part of the solution so that makes them a part of the problem. They were aware of what was happening in Columbus and did nothing to stop it.

Your previous mayor, police chief, trustee, made sure to keep the LCSO away to sway them from finding out what was happening and the unscrupulous things they were up to. Good intentions are better than having bad intentions even if you are prohibited from making them a reality. I believe with you new mayor those good intentions may be acted upon now.

Maybe she trusts the volunteers more than she did the employees. Maybe she was afraid the employees would lose, misplace or mishandle the documents she needs.

I know fully understand the scope of the actions of the Columbus area iover the past 20 years which has seen blatant violations of the law by the same two ar three families.
A few years back there was a continual aggravated assault on the community by two unnamed families which held the community in a corrupt oligarchical situation for at least a decade while they ruined the reputations of several honest people in order to make usurp additional positions for their own family members.
One lady was caught in flagrante with a member of the police force while on the job and pardoned only to abscond with school district moneies in order to fraudulently purchase a new vehicle. She was teacher who hired someone to steal the older car and used the insurance money to buy a new one.
When this person was caught and susequestly let go by a nepotistic cousin judge, she continued her dishonesty by levelling accusations against several district employees in a vindictive play to replace them with members of her own family.
Some people have no scruples and deserve to live in that isolated desert community with its corruption and lawless mentality.
I'm honestly sorry for the good people of Columbus but I hope that the bad ones get what they deserve.

Judging by the comments here, many locals seem to be in near complete denial when it comes to the corruption of their community.
This place has seen plenty of it over the years and so much of it has been fomented by those same families.
Its easy for some people to act so spotless, but look at the historical record of the people involved. There is a history here.

How did ''they'' keep LCSO away from doing their job? That comment is just a lousy excuse for them not doing what the County pays thm to do. So they were afraid of the mayor and would do nothing? So now they are not afraid of the mayor so they will go ahead and do their job? Sorry ....they knew what was happening and choose to not up hold their sworn duty to protect and serve Luna County and Columbus. It is a part of Luna County. On the intention statement they had some very bad intentions that were acted on and carried out by the LCSO during that time.

Then why was there no law suit? Was an investigation ever held to find out why that happened?

A law suit because the LCSO would not do their job in Columbus which is part of Luna County and was afraid of the mayor and the trustees? An investigation done by the agency who should have been investigating the corruption in Columbus? Can they investigate their selves and find out what happened? It was stated they were kept from their duty because of the mayor and trustees. Implied the mayor and trustees would not let the LCSO do their job. That was the excuse or reason to not be available to help in Columbus all thirty or so employees in the department. The last I knew the mayor and trustees were not the law enforcement in Columbus. I guess the LCSO could only do what the mayor told him to do?
What would you like a law suit to be about? I did notice the FBI didn't seem to have a problem enforcing the laws but I guess their relationship with the people in Columbus was not so tight. If the LCSO could not find any dirt on these people who are now in jail awaiting trial then what is realy going on in Columbus all that time? Why are they in Jail and why is the LCSO going to patrol Columbus? Mayor Lawson you have your work cut out for you.

Well the LCSO will be there now like it or not. So let them do their job like they were supposed to be doing in the first place and let Mayor Lawson do her job like she is supposed to. I'm sure everything will work out fine for her in getting Columbus in order if everyone just lets her and LCSO do their jobs. Best of luck in bringing back law and order to Columbus.

Reading many of these comments reminds me of "a mind is a terrible thing to waste". Columbus has some good things happening now. Nicole Lawson has already in just 2 weeks done a great job. The Sheriffs Office will also do a good job. Some of the comments here against the Sheriffs Office are from people the Sheriff fired and then Columbus hired them. The only good Columbus police officer was Rosie. Period. If you want to know the truth about the Sheriffs Department working in Columbus then do what I did at the last meeting. Go ask Deputy Odem. I see him working here in Columbus more than I ever saw Columbus chief or others, except for Rosie. Why blame Nicole because the village cant pay for a police department. Thats crazy. She is still having to deal with the mafioso families in Columbus. She needs support.

Sorry to say, but there will more than likely never be law and order in Columbus. What an absolute SHIT HOLE. Why on earth would anyone who isn't on the LAM or conducting illegal activity want to live there? For the scenery?

So Mr Odem will discuss personel issues the Sheriff has shared with him to the general public? Wow....
Does Mr Odem know you have made this generous offer for him?
The mayor has my full support. Rosie is a good officer.
Take your own advice''the mind is a terrible thing to waste'' only if there is something in that large space between your ears. I know you mean well but posts like yours don't help make things better for the LCSO or Mr Odem.
