This seems to go in cycles, they create a police department and then they get rid of the police department. So how I get the feeling that some people in Columbus just don't like having any police around. That leaves me to wonder why.

ONE full time, certified Deputy (allegedly) living in Columbus.

5 Reserve Deputies (non-certified)

Undercover Deputies roaming around the area

For ONE year

LCSO confiscates ALL the Columbus PD equipment and vehicles....which may or may not be illegal.... according to the Granting Agency which supplied them

It stops the bleeding of the Village coffers by the CPD:
*no insurance payments (personnel & equipment)
*no heating bills
*no electric bills
*no maintenance bills

Any one think its odd that Columbus believes the state told them to keep their cleaning personnal on pay role and not hire police any protection that is NOT in direct connection with the people who are in jail. Some of the LCSO people are very much connected to the dark side of Columbus. I guess the path of least resistance is always going to be a weak spot in the Columbus leadership. A right direction...... would have been a brand new start and not picking up the left over scraps of insult and desperation the LCSO will give the village. Something for nothing... you will always pay a price. They have not protected the village in the past, they knew what was going on and had proof of it and did NOTHING to stop it. God bless the mess in Columbus. Best of luck for you future.

But wait a second!

Charles Scampy de Columbus School Teacher has not penned any oposition to this outrage!

Lies Lies all Lies!

Where is Charles anyway? Where are all the voters who stood up and voiced strong opinions fighting for Eddie Espinosa? WHere are all of you now that your Village is in disarray? Where are the voters who voted for Espinosa? Why are they hiding?

Why did you let this happen to poor old eddie and his family? why are you letting his brother in law still sit on the board? Roberto Gutierrez, trustee, father to bals, brother in law to Espinosa...

All you that voted for Espinosa need to attnd his trial, stand up and tell the judge and jury how great a man eddie is! Every one needs to gather together on October 3rd and write a letter campaign to the judge getting poor ed released from jail! He was framed i tells ya! It was all someone elses fault!

And now, a Mayor who keeps a cleaning lady over keeping cops on the street. What a deal! NOW Thats My Kind of MAYOR!Thats the best way to keep them streetS clean Mayor! Why did you cut her hours though? I say advance the hours for the cleaning people to 100 hour a week!

If the Village only has 60,000.00 dollars in it's bank account how can it afford to pay a fire chief 30,000.000 a year and buy him a 30 to 40 thousand dollar personal truck? Only 2,000 people live in the Village.

I cannot wait to hear what Addisons take is on this story. The Headlight news is not the same as the Columbust news, It appears that Grant county and Hatch will be a part of the protection? Does that mean that the LCSO will have to share all the loot from the Columbus PD? Does it belong to Homeland security?
I get the feeling that those four hundred thousand dollar storage containers ''Columbus substation'' will now be in use very soon. Clean out the mouse turds and get new copper wire put in and get the certificate of occupancy from the county. Now that they have control over it it will be put to use.

It was surprising that even though the residents were consistently AGAINST bringing LCSO into town, the decision was made behind closed doors to do so? And you're right, we still have cleaning personnel, don't we? I sure hope our new mayor isn't found to be in cahoots with Cobos! She seems to want what the residents want, or so she says. So why is LCSO back in Columbus?????

What I find fishy is that the residents of Columbus don't want the LCSO patrolling the town. Makes more sense to have some security that will not cost them a cent than to have no one. Hey Columbus like it or not you are part of Luna County, New Mexico, and the USA. Your previous mayor got you into this situation, so let your new mayor at least try to get this town back to civil order. As for your new mayor I think she is on the right track.

To "Tell Me Why", before you start throwing around your little innuendoes, why don't you go to the fire dept and find out why the fire chief has a new truck and why he gets paid to provide the Village of Columbus an outstanding service. I'm sure he'd be more than happy to speak with you and anyone else that wants to take an interest in the community.

The Luna County minutes Jan. 8, 2009 seem to tell another story. He was very happy about using the sub station at that time. He showed no dislike of the building and was glad it would be completed. But he did not get his way at that time so its not been completed yet. This took place shortly after an officer was set up to be beaten and was given no back up to assure the beating would take place. I believe that the border patrol did step in and took mercy on him. Columbus decided to say no thank you to the JPA agreement Cobos and county had drawn up. The expenses were too high for the village. Read the minutes it will explain it. the new Chief hire was hired to do what ever it took to disban the department. Having an officer work alone was a sure way to get the job done. Once the officer was beaten to the point he would no longer be part of the force ( medical reasons) Santana promptly quit. He was there two months? The County hired him to do security at starmax. The LCSO gave his son a scholorship. Get good pay to play in Luna Coounty.

Perhaps the goverment should have the border moved 5 miles north. How about it? Hmm...

courptioin still there! ok if Eddie didnt pay the bills there in columbus then wheres the money? and If this new mayor is going to trust the LCSO to go to columbus and put the village in danger? Why Nicole are you doing this? The village is safer with its own police force ? They can respond to a call faster befor the LCSO gets there . Not to mention columbus mayor can get GRANT money for your department for border secutiy you are closer than Deming is so this makes you more to get the money for your officers and any thing for your department! Why are you trusting Deming LCSO They never Helped befor why now dose this mean Cobos is going to now get MORE Grant money to help with border security? will he want to be in the news that columbus is in Danger and He needs the money for Columbus Nicole Keep your Ploice force and use the money for Columbus! YOUR JOB as a mayor is to provie Columbus the best way you can NOT to pawn over Columbus problems to Deming!YOUR going to see Yourself that Deming Office is not going to respond like you think! letting the village people down agin! Dont you think The village wants pertection with the cartel being so close by? And Not one offcier In sight! How sad if someone dies becuse theres not no patrol officers In sight! I see this happing real soon!

What part of Luna County do you not understand. Luna County is not just Deming. Luna County entails a larger area outside of Deming. I agree that Columbus needs to have their own police force and maybe the new police chief Smith was better than Vega, but in a financial crisis or for the time being, the new mayor is looking where to make ends meet. Maybe when Columbus's finances get back to normal, she will rehire Derek. but the LCSO should also be patrolling there like it or not.

You make a good point. Columbus is part of Luna county but the LCSO did not treat Columbus like it was in the past. With 30 people on pay role they could not send one man for back up when they were asked to do so. Where were they when all this stuff was happening in Columbus? The new mayor is looking to make ends meet a task she is equal to, how ever part of the financil problems the village of Columbus is suffering is also in part what the LCSO did to the department when there were honest people in the force, who truly had a heart to serve the people of Columbus. Think about the actions of the LCSO and their roots and ties with Espinosa. These people go back a long way. Columbus has a deep hole to dig out of, with good leadership skills and the support of the village they can make it happen. The LCSO will not relinquish the territory they claims and it will be a fight to ever get your own force back. If they do give it back it will be because it will make them appear good. It will happen around election time. Their personal anger issues towards the men who at one time worked for them and went to work in the Columbus department is more than evident in thier lack of support and actions for any one with common sense to see. There are two sides to every story. It took two to make the mess in Columbus.
