We have a neighborhood watch. Everyone owns a gun.
That should detour a little bit of crime.

The citizens of Grant County should be outraged that the sheriff is assuming that the lack of work in the area is the reason that people are using drugs, commiting property crimes and beating each other up! Those are choices that individuals make. The sun-news has not used any type of evidence scientific or otherwise to base their story on. It's obvious that the sun news is allowing the Sheriff to use them as a political soap box for his campaign. What a sham!! Wake up people!!!!!

One other thing, what evidence has the local sheriff used to say this? Wasn't he just a street sergeant before being appointed. Has he become an expert in 4 months on human behaviour. I would think that he would praise the citizens of the county for banding together during these tough times instead of pointing out the bad things in the county and the sun news should at least have something to back their story up other than just a simple street cops word!

Mr. Rock Steady,

Is it possible you are against the Sherrif? Could it just be a nice public statement for the citizens to be aware to keep an eye out? to lock their doors.

It was for me, Thanks Sherrif for reminding me that their are idiots with now respect and I need to protect myself, and my belongings.

Mr. Confused, you probably are confused if you a reminder to lock your doors or to keep an eye out! The percentages of you becoming a victim of a crime in this county are low. It's your expectation that the Sheriff is looking out for you best interest with this story is in fact a wrong one! The percentage of GOOD SOLID citizens in Grant County is extremely high and using the media to scare people is wrong!

In the past year or so, I have read numerous articles quoting local sources (law enforcement and social agencies) that we would see spikes in incidents of crime and domestic violence as a result of layoffs at our copper mines and the subsequent jobs lost in the community. The entire global economy is despressed, and so are the people who are jobless. This is a very difficult time in our history.

The Sheriff was just quoting the facts, nothing more, nothing less.

Desperate and depressed people can do desperate and stupid things -- including crime and violence -- when they feel they are out of options.

What facts was the sheriff quoting? There are no facts to back up this statement. Did he say how many arrests of laid-off workers with previously unblemished records his officers have made?
Villanueva is the acting sheriff. He is running for election. The Sun-News, probably out of inexperience, is letting him use the newspaper to further the campaign.
If he has news to pass on to the public, that's fine. However, his opinions are not news. If the Sun-News is going to use them then it is a matter of simple professionalism to balance them with the opinions of his opponents.

Everyone is so quick to blame the 'meth problem' in this town. What I want to know is WHERE ARE THE ARRESTS? We never hear about meth related arrests. Not here in the Sun-news, not in the Daily Press nor anywhere else locally. If meth is such a problem, don't you think people would be getting arrested for it? hhmmmmmmm.....let's think about that one for awhile.

The rise in crime is because the criminals know they can get away with it. If the criminals knew law enforcement was capable of catching them, and if the criminals knew that the judge would put them away for a long time, the crime rate in this area would not be off the chart.

Yeah, this is exactly what the paper needed, another story about our very own unelected Sheriff.

I predicted a few weeks ago we would see another story about him sometime soon, and here it is.

Do you suppose the bad economy is behind the fact that the sheriff's department is out of ink and can't make fingerprints for citizens who need them?

Massaro,

The Sheriff is the Sheriff. Appointed, elected, either way, he is the Sheriff of Grant County and he is the person who speaks for the Grant County Sheriff's Department. The Silver City Sun-News has not endorsed any candidate for Sheriff or any other local office (Mayor, town council, etc.). If we do, you can read about it on the Editorial page, not on the front page. When the election draws closer we will conduct interviews with each of the candidates running for the office of Sheriff of Grant County. Neither Sheriff Villanueva, nor any other law enforcement or town official has done any "favors" for me nor will they. I, and the Sun-News do not operate that way.

I have to agree by saying that from all outward appearances you seem to be giving Villanueva an unfair advantage by allowing him to take advantage of your seemingly unending desire to only do cream puff fluff stories. You really have become a tool for him and his desire to be elected Sheriff.

Whats really sad about all of this is that it's pretty obvious that you don't even see the reality of the situation. Your CLUELESS

Look, doesn't Fat Bill make the newspaper allot? So you think the paper is endorsing him too! Get a clue. The Sheriff is supposed to make the news allot if he is doing his job elected or appointed. I for one want to know how he is going about his business and exactly what his plans are. If it weren't for the paper i would have to stop him in Wal-Mart and ask him.

elkstine, anything he does right now is for his own political benefit.

I guess you havn't noticed that Steele has been doing little "PR" type one paragraph stories for him. This includes a story of him standing in Wal-Mart shopping for kids, and another short story of him standing in front of four small boxes of toys that are being donated to the kids in Grant County. Both of those stories bring to mind
the "Baby Kissing" of politicians at a whistle stop on their campaign tour. And then we have this story about how he's placing the blame for crime on everything from unemployment to the lack of our tax paying citizens putting in an effort to watching their communities.

His blame game cannot be backed up by any statistical data. This story, just like the others are all for his political gain.

Yes meth is a problem and has been for some time.

You will not read about arrests until law enforcement starts arresting dealers and users.

You obviously are not from the area. Until Christine Steele joined the Silver City Sun News you would not have had the coverage on crime that she has been responsible for making sure it gets in the paper. When I lived in Silver City the SC Daily Press was called the Daily Mess.
