Moving to Iron Mountain

Hubby and I are moving to Iron Mountain in October. Will need a rental house close to VA hospital. Preferable with no steps and hopefully walking distance to shopping, restaurants, etc. Does the rental market free up when tourists leave? About how much does rent run for at least 2 bedroom ranch style? Which motel-hotel would be best for a one or two week stay while we look for permanent housing and getting settled?
We are coming from Louisville, Ky. and look forward to clean air, low crime rate, clean surroundings and short commutes. When does snow generally start and end? We are retired and Hubby is a disabled Vet who volunteers at our local VA and hopes to do so when we get there.
Any suggestions for us? Thanks for any info.

Good luck finding any apartment that isn't subsidized with handicapper access. As for a low crime rate, well... Make sure no neighbors know what types of medications are in the house. There is a huge problem with drug use in this town that the SIX police agencies in the twin city area refuse to deal with in a proper manner.
Make sure your locks are new, and please be very wary of whom you confide in when you move here. I would hate hearing of new arrivals being had.
