That is an incredibly hyperbolic statement: "The people in jail and prison live and eat better than most Americans do....." Either the food in prison is catered by a four-star French restaurant or most Americans are unable or unwilling to feed themselves a diet on par with low-quality mass-produced meals that are purchased on the basis of what is the cheapest possible way to do this.
Every time I read the comments on this type of story there is all this misplaced indignant rage that results in people making ridiculous statements based on unfounded assumptions and a sense of victimhood, i.e. " the criminals are treated better than the good people." If this is so, then do something rather than post an ill-informed comment on the internet that won't change a thing. Or, you can continue to tell yourself "I try and try, but the world is against me, here I am doing everything right and the criminals are being spoon-fed caviar! The honest citizen who does right is a martyr, and I want a medal!"
This is a logically vacant argument: If people in prison "live and eat better than most Americans do..." Then why aren't we lined up outside the prison gates?
The system is not perfect, but it is not so backward to suggest that we should envy the meals people are getting in prison. I don't know anybody in prison and have never been to prison, but making fantastic statements that suggest the world is crazy and I am the pitiful victim of this twisted justice contributes nothing at all to righting wrongs or making the world a better place. I see these types of remarks over and over again everywhere and they are useless.
It amazes me to find those commenting about something in which they, by their own admission, know nothing about. Working in a jail, I have witnessed the inmates eating better than my family. No, it's not caviar that they are eating, but it is balanced and meets federal and state guidlines. I also find the free cable tv, free medical and dental somewhat annoying, especially when I pay for all of mine. Oh yes, the facility will bill them for some things but do really believe that these people will ever repay this debt? Don't be a fool, we (and I am including you) will continue to work and pay our bills and taxes and they will continue to suck the life's blood from us whether they are inside or out. I believe these are cries from the citizenry that are expressing their frustraions of carrying these freeloaders who are products of an entitlement based generation that has no value system.

By the way, while you are so busy defending the leeches, they will be plotting to break into your house, take what they want and kill you if you dare get in their way once they are "rehabilitated" and returned to the streets.
