What needs to happen to get the Ocean Springs Storm shelter back on the table??? Or at least get it out to the entire community to decide as opposed to having the Alderman decide (unwisely i might add)that its is frivolous, how does it make any sense to NOT have one?

There is already 3 storm shelters in Jackson county. Ocean springs doesn't need its own. If the city really wants a new gymnasium for the kids they should foot the bill. Obtaining the gym under the guise of the need for a "shelter" isn't fare to fellow tax payers. Also the city doesnt have the funds necessary to operate the building once built. There is no need for a shelter that far south of the Interstate.

I take it you don't live south of the interstate, or maybe not even in Ocean Springs, just a guess....

If there's a bad storm then you want to be away from the affected area. North of I-10 would be better.

Exactly. The thing costs money to insure, keep clean, staffed, upkeep, maintenance, etc.

Just because the feds build it doesn't mean they pay for its upkeep. And if the shtf you wanna be up in Vancleave away from the bayous....

But yea -- the local school district has actually maxed out its millage. The Ocean Springs School District can no longer raise taxes. All they can do henceforth is cut spending & borrow money to balance their budget & to meet their needs. The city itself may owe, at least from what I read in the paper, millions to the school district.

So the city, which hasn't given raises in years to its workers, is going to have a LOTTA money to pay out to various things coming up. And if the Justice Dept cleans the city out over the Psychamore thing -- your city budget is gonna be in even bigger sh*t.

This city is on the brink of bankruptcy but yet they keep looking for ways to spend money.
Now we hear that since the parks dept. can't get this new building, the Parks Director wants to take over the Civic Center for an after school daycare and move the children out of the building that it is currently in.
I WONDER WHAT THAT WOULD COST?
These people can not quit with the stupid S___.
We are also hearing that this PARK'S DIRECTOR has a very SHADY past history before becoming a city employee.
We are also hearing that she had the employee application requirements changed so that she could put her #1 man in a position under her.
This City don't need another building, they need to wake up to what is going on in this City and stop the spending and the waste that they are overlooking.

Pay attention to this one. The people that worked to get the budget together are all against it because the city can't afford the upkeep and insurance. The city is not in good financial shape and will have to raise taxes to pay for it in the end. This is another example of the mayor thinking that it is free money.

I think a lotta people from the surrounding region are confused by Ocean Springs. Yes, the city has more money than say Gautier but its just the APPEARANCE of wealth. The downtown bar scene. The quaint couture botiques & gift shop strip in downtown, the overpriced restaurants with the cheap China-made facades that make it look like they're high-end European eateries.

People who can be easily duped into thinking the city is high class by into the myth. The colorful flower displays by the highway. The artsy fartsy Connie art displays downtown. All that s**t cost $$$$. Its not free.

Behind all the apparent "wealth" & the recent upswing in new construction -- is just a massive spending boom. The problem? Much of that was financed by one-time FEMA or federal or state money or private grants the city somehow scrounged up.

Another thing -- Connie is wrong in that she assumes a balanced budget attained by higher taxes is automatically a good thing. It is for accounting purposes for the present. But longer term under state law you can only raise millage & sales taxes so much. So the more taxes you hike now, the less you can do so in the future unless the legislature/governor approve it. And fat chance @ them approving a millage rate hike in this tea party state.

Dalgo is the smartest one in terms of money on that council because he knew the Psychamore thing was going to be a total boondoggle for them when the feds get involved & start enforcing ADA fines in a few yrs.

But they all don't realize that if they keep hiking spending & taxes at some point they'll hit their millage rate. The local paper said that the revenue from the 2% sales tax hit a peak a few yrs back.

OS doesn't have Ingalls & Chevron writing the city enormous property tax checks to keep the otherwise "Moss Point South" with its Mexican barrios, white trash trailer parks & black apartment/shanty ghettos solvent.

Budgeting doesn't work like that. You can hike taxes but if you don't curb spending expenditure growth you'll just have to raise taxes again.@ some point in the coming few yrs the millage upper limit will be reached & they won't be able to hike taxes any further. Then they will have to furlough & lay off even more than they are now.

And then no amt. of "chic" bars & cheap-facade faux-upper class restaurants selling overpriced plates of wannabe hip chicken dishes is going to keep the city's coffers solvent.

Anderson thinks Dalgo is so smart. Dalgo has been pushing a tax increase for the past three years. He misses 1 out of 3 board meetings and serves on none of the committees that help craft the budget or oversee spending. Sounds like you were describing him when you were trying to describe the Mayor. Oh by the way, they are political allies when it comes to raising taxes. If you check the attendance records for the past 8 years you will see how many meetings he really does miss.

Dalgo was smart enough to vote against wasting the taxpayer's money on the Psycamore appeal that the cities attorney told them they cannot win. Already spent $80,000+ on legal fees and this does not include the appeal costs. How could the adults on this OS BOA make such dumb decisions? Dalgo will be testifying against these buffoons in the upcoming civil suits and USDOJ actions and he should. He can miss most of the meetings and still make better decisions than the rest of them.

He was smart in that he could tell the Pyschamore thing was going to be a huge problem down the line. I guess the other ones figured there was nothing to it. The DOJ is going to rip the city a new one.

I'm not a supporter of Dalgo, I know nothing of his opinions overall but I read in the paper he predicted the city's expenses for the Psych thing was gonna be huge, & on that he was right.

That being said they're approaching max-millage. Even if they hike taxes its not necessarily going to generate more revenue. They spend too much as is for their revenue base.

They say that this Parks and Rec Director that wants this new building so bad was charged with a felony and did some time some years back. Not sure its true but the resource is very reliable so why is she working with this city if this is the case. They claim it was did at a bank in Biloxi. Let' dig it up and see. Her name is Geri Straight.

If true its because she "knows somebody" -- the same as it always is in these parts. That's how everybody gets ahead here.

Its like my mother's work place, this medical office that gets its money via Medicare -- meaning you're paying their salaries -- the woman in charge has given cushy desk jobs to all of her family members. I've also heard Margaritaville is also basically a giant employment project for a few families who know Buffett. Or they got their friends/relatives on & that sorta stuff.

But I wouldn't be shocked @ all, if that was true.

If you remember Geri Straight was let go or demoted by the city a few years back because of her criminal record and then resumed her present job. That being said it appears by all accounts she does a good job and has been in this department for many years. People do change and are rehabilitated. She is a good example of a person who turned her life around.

Most people have no clue as to what goes on behind the scene at Parks. The BOA needs to talk to some of Parks employees without anyone knowing about it so the truth can come out. That's why I say "Sooner or later it will all come out". The BIG FRONT that she puts on can't last FOREVER.

There's no reason to spread the stink at this moment but we hope this will bring an insight to some people and jog their curiosity enough that they will start to think and look.
It's so crazy how blind people can be especially when it concerns the citizens of OCEAN SPRINGS.
Just take the time to look at this Department very closely. VERY CLOSELY. SHE'S THINKS SHE'S SLICK! And check out her lover HUFFY that she put under her as a Park's Superintendent. They even had the job requirements changed to put him in this position.
It's all going to come out shortly.

You were very quick to defend this Park's Director, so how much do you know about her?
People of OCEAN SPRINGS need to wake up. There is a lot of abuse going on and it's a shame that no one is looking!

Has anyone stopped to think about the money HER AND HER LOVER is paid by the City of Ocean Springs.
Got a new truck to drive home to Gautier and if there's a callout, She just calls the LOVER and he will go to the shop and get a truck to take care of it. You are only suppose to have a TRUCK to drive home if you are on CALL but it's obvious for some reason this does not apply to HER.
Wonder how much it costs the City for this truck to go to HER home each DAY AND ALL THE OTHER PLACES THIS city TRUCK IS SEEN out and about and there are photo's.
Why can't the BOA see all this abuse?
