Never again

Holmes Motors is the worst place to buy a car from. I bought a car from them and had nothing but problems. I paid cash for the car (11,500) and with in a month the idle sensor went out. I had several things replaced. I had it checked out by a mechanic (not them again because they wanted to charge about triple what another mechanic would charge) and they said there was salt water rust all under the car. I bought the car after Katrina and the mechanic said it should of never been sold it was trash! I know several people along the coast who have bought from them and all have had problems with their cars. NEVER go to this place, they over charge and their cars are JUNK!!!!!

This story for starters was years and years ago and is just not true. If anyone even wasted their time to read this just please disregard.

I can not attest as to whether Holmes Motors sells lemon vehicles or defective vehicles as some other posts state.

What I can tell you is that I have been dealing with car dealerships for a while. As long as you go in there letting them know what are your expectations and they don't cross that line, most of them are ok to deal with. After all they are trying to make a living by marking up a vehicle you want.

There's a difference between a car dealership or salesman making a living and trying to suck the life out of you. By all indications Holmes Motors is of the latter kind.

Here's my short but long enough interaction with Holmes Motors, that send me running the other way:

I called about a 2007 Toyota Tundra Double Cab/Cloth Interior/V6 with about 100K miles. Nothing special about the truck. The asking price was around $14K. That was about right in accordance wit Kelly Blue Book value and the N.A.D.A.

I conduct all my business on the phone as I believe this a good way to gage anyone's sales personnel. In short I don't like to waste my time. I ask what needs to be asked and proceed from there.

-First, the salesman acted as if he was in a hurry and I was not worthy of his time. If a salesman or business place can't afford to give a few minutes of their precious time.....What do you think will happen after they have your $?

I don't need to answer that one for you.

-Second, I was asked immediately about financing. Wait a minute. You don't even know or have asked anything about the product I'm looking at, but you want to proceed to my reach into wallet?! RED FLAG

I told the salesman that I was already approved and that all my financing was in place. Btw, doing this prior to approaching a dealership is primordial and essential when it comes to buying a vehicle. The salesman proceeded to tell me that they couldn't or actually wouldn't accept my previously arranged financing, because all financing was done in-house and no outside financing was accepted by Holmes Motors. Another RED FLAG!

You have to ask yourself this question: What kind of car dealership doesn't accept financed money/loans?!

The answer is extremely simple: The dealership that is not in the business of selling cars, but it is in the business of selling loans. That is their primary source of income. The vehicle being sold is just, well, the vehicle being used to use you and abuse you.

-Thirdly, the salesman told me that a down payment between 3K-4K would be required. No problem there. The problem came when I stated that the down payment sum would be taken off the final price. making the financing about 10K. Right?!

Oh, no! The salesman stated that that was just the down payment. So a truck that is worth 14K now just became a truck worth 17K-18K?!

In business this is called a non-disclosure. Meaning, the dealership, is under no responsibility to disclose in their advertisement all these little details such as how exactly the down payment affects the final price of the vehicle, dealerships fees, documentations fees and other fees that are designed to free you of your hard earned cash.

I didn't even bothered to ask what their fees were because I already knew enough to know I didn't want to deal with Holmes Motors.

I'm hoping that prospective buyers, specially young service members and the non savvy will read this and do their research before heading out and purchasing a vehicle.

In my educated opinion only two types of people will buy their vehicles from places such as Holmes Motors. Those are: People with very bad credit scores where they have to submit to this border line loan sharking practices. And, the young and uninformed. Gullible victims.

I don't know who Jason Barq is and who comes to the defense of Holmes Motors. I have no problem telling you or anyone that Holmes Motors business practices are shady to say the least.

Holmes Motors is a place where people with no credit can get a car in order to provide for themselves. But there is some things to be questioned and researched before doing so. My sister bought a car from them three months ago which they charged $3000 over KBB retail not including term loan interest or $1000 down-payment. Recently a power steering hp hose started leaking onto the exhaust manifold. I did some research on her model year car and found that honda had a recall in 2011 on the hp hose leak that was causing honda vehicles to catch fire. I called HM to find out if they had replaced the hose. The salesman did not have any knowledge of recalls. I could not get an answer on whether they had replaced it. They said it was sold "as is" and I should call honda. I called a honda dealer and they replaced it for free due to safety recall guidelines. Now, what does not make sense about holmes motors is if they are not fixing life threatening safety recalls that are free to get fixed, it would lead me to question if they look to fix any issues their vehicles may have before selling them. Used dealers are not required by law to have recalls fixed before they sell, but it is ethical and good business to do so. There are dealers out there who do a full inspection and fix any issues before selling a vehicle, just have to do research on the Internet. I would like to know what their repossession percentage is.

I bought a car from holmes motors and its an ok car, but they broke the seat when taking it out. They were suppose to fix something on the dashboard because they messed that up too. Well, nothing has been fixed and don't expect it either. Its a good place for people who don't want to finance a high amount, but the service is god awful. My next car will not be bought from them.

I bought a mustang gt in 06 & that's the most unreliable car I've ever owned!! The day after I bought it, it broke down at school due to a busted fuel injector. When buying the over-priced, high mileage car, we asked when the last time the oil was changed & the salesman said he had no idea. What dealership can't tell you something like that? If they didn't they know, you'd think they would have changed it. When my car broke down, my parents tried for weeks to call & make a complaint, but no one would answer their calls/messages. I've spent more in repairs than the $13,000 for the car. Bad fuel injector, bad gas gauge, busted rim, the spare tire was shredded, driver's door panel ripped off, 3 radiators etc etc. Everyone I know who bought a car there has had problems. My brother almost bought a car from them a few yrs before me, but read in the news that same week that they were busted for turning back odometers. Unfortunately he couldn't remember what their bad ratings were for until a few weeks after I bought my money pit. I owned a 40 yr old car before that and it was more reliable & spent less on its repairs, even after it sat in a barn for 4 yrs.

Hello Holmes Motors management and lurkers,
I would just like to say that I was considering doing business with you guys but after reading 93 pages of complaints I will have to take my business elsewhere. I find it laughable that you think that it is "good business" to get onto these review sites to defend yourselves. No professioal organization coducts themselves this way!

My thoughts exactly... I'm sure there are some happy customers but all in all the numbers speak for themselves...

What are you doing? The Holmes motors integrity plan is solid! Our company is solid. We have a professional hard working straight team. The products we sell have all been through a detailed che k in. The financial program is better than anything you will find. In no way do we attempt to rip anyone off....mislead....or take advantage of people. If you or anyone reading this feels that way then pi k ip the phone and call management. We want to know! We responded to your better business bureau complaint. You have not been harmed in any way. Unfortunately you dealt with a new employee and it didn't go as it should have. Either way you were offered a great opportunity to buy whatever you wanted without paying too much. It didn't work out. You feel it necessary to spend your time visiting websites slandering a company without real merit?
The plan is crap! the company has a long history of employing criminals and your inventory is junk at best!. And yes, I have extensive knowledge of Holmes motors! If you have half a brain, you'll stay clear of this dealership AND it's employees!

We believe that professional companies do indeed address customer concerns directly. Our integrity plan we started 5 years ago has been a very successful vehicle purchasing program. We have thousands of very happy customers. Along the way we do repo... Exactly as we promised in the beginning. Sometimes a car breaks down...we don't deny that but we don't build the car. We don't put cars on the sales floor knowing it's a bad car. We thoroughly examine test and fix what we find may be an issue. Every story on this site is from either someone that didn't pay their bill and we unfortunately had to repo.... Or someone that had a vehicle break down in some way outside of what we cover.... Both scenarios were clearly communicated up front. One more scenario is our competition that can't stand losing to our superior product and program so they make stories up. Let's just hope that if you are looking for a company to work with on your vehicle purchase that you do your own due diligence and get your personal opinion by visiting one of our professional locations. We certainly would not have entire families repeat customers and referrals at the level we do by ripping people off!

Sincerely. Mgt

After looking for financing on a vehicle, our credit union offered us 5.9% but we saw that Holmes Motors was offering guaranteed 2.9% financing. We called them and sure enough they got us the 2.9% payment and saved us quite a bit of money. They have a good selection of used cars and great financing options. Definitely a great deal for us.

Payment was do on Tuesday which they give you a 5 day grace period to pay it after the day it's do. Well here it is Sunday my last day to pay which I had planned on doing this morning only to wake up and find they had came and repossessed the truck a day early! Never have I had a problem with them in the 4 years I've been dealing with them but this has send me over the edge. They wrongly repossessed my truck and will hear about it tomorrow as soon as they open. Insurance is up to date or they would have taken my SUV too so it's just them being them and they won't get away with it I promise you that!!!!!

first of all! when We bought our vehicle the red flags should have been a sign! they were all drinking Beer and LIQUOR (mixed drinks you could clearly smell it) DRUNK! the man who was the manager was completely RUDE when i asked about my down payment being increased and not going towards the pay off. he threatened to not even sell me my vehicle because i asked questions. He was ticked off b/c they realized theywere selling it too cheap.... they are extremely unprofessional! THEN AT THE END WHEN YOU ARE FINISHED PAYING YOUR VEHICLE OFF YOU HAVE TO PAY ANTHER 1,0000 IF YOU WISH TO KEEP YOUR VEHICLE ! SERIOUSLY I JUST PAID IT FOR 3 YEARS AND ITS PAID OFF WHY THE HECK WOULD I NOT WANT TO KEEP IT!!!!!!!!!!
