The grass is greener out of state. I was born and raised in Plainfield. I have lived in FL, CO, and now live in MN. All the places I have lived is better than CT in a monetary sense. All the jobs are leaving the state in droves, and why wounldn't they.
I make 50k a year and just built my first home for 160k in MN and even though this is a high tax state, it pales in comparison to CT. I would love to move back but I know that will never happen. My quality of living for myself and my children are more important than me wanting to be back home. |

Jessica, The Litchfield area of CT is beautiful. If you are into making your own fun, like hiking, biking, snowshoeing etc, the Northwest Corner of the state is for you. It can be expensive and the conveniences are not always down the street (my town doesn't have a grocery store for instance). However, if you like the country and small towns, it is the best part of the state. If you have children, the schools are top notch. Good luck with your decision. |

RE: there's nowhere to take your kids if you really wanted to have some fun with the family.
Thatīs just not true. In CT we have Lake Compounce, Quassy Amusement park, two aquariums (Norwalk and Mystic) numerous museums (Childrens Discovery, Barnum, etc.) that are great for kids, several zoos, I believe (Beardsley in Bpt), lots of lovely State Parks, beaches, Ocean Beach in NL has a beach and amusements....thereīs all kinds of thstuff to do with kids here...If you can afford to pay the rent and still have money to take the kids out, that is. |

the reality is that meaningful jobs are leaving CT and are being replaced by service industry jobs or a few "professional type" consultant jobs, etc. John from MN said it best. 50 K ayear won't buy a house in CT, that's for sure. Hell you probably can't find a condo for 160K. That gut bought a house! Go figure?

Funny. Not one mention of the people that live here in CT. Hardly a friendly one in the bunch. I moved here from Il. 20 years ago. People in CT are arrogant or they couldn't care less about anyone else.
Any close friends I made while here were all from somewhere else. Sure the land is nice but the people won't even look at you unless you have something to offer them. I guess that comes from the endless quest for money. I really want to leave but my wife is reticent. |
|
Don't do it. If you like people and are looking forward to making friends pick the midwest. People in CT are unfriendly and couldn't care less about their neighbors. |
|
Jessica SAVE YOURSELF! I was born and raised here, moved away for about 10 years, missed it and came back. I musta been crazy. Go somewhere nice. It is not good here, sky high taxes, sky high utility bills and not a good job market. Unfriendly people and pollution. Sorry to disappoint. |

Is Connecticut really that bad? By the sound of things it sounds like it is the worst place to live on the planet. If it is so bad and prices are so high and there are no jobs, how come so many people still reside there? I am not a native I am just a New Yorker on the outside looking in and I may be naive but it seems to me that you can find corruption just about anywhere you go. As for the high cost of living, not by New York standards. Also, if you are moving from a state where the cost of living is higher and you go to a state where it is lower, you will make out like a bandit (at least temporarily). Ask the natives of the state you are moving to if the cost of living is low. I would venture to say, not. I think if you live somewhere (anywhere) you do your best to make it home. If you decide you're going to hate you're environment based on rampant crime, poor housing, lack of schools, lack of jobs, burned out homes, that's one thing but if you decide that you hate the environment because the people are snobs, everyone is concerned about getting more money, the place looks like Puerto Rico (as is the case with one of the post I read) or because the place isn't exactly what it was 20 years ago, that is completely something else. Home is where the heart is. If you're neighbors won't speak with you, there are others, If the homes are starting to look rundown in your neighborhood, inspire others and give you're home a makeover (believe me, people will follow suit, if the can, just not to be out down) and raise the value of your home to boot. If there is a shortage of jobs in your county go to the next. The majority of New York City residents work in Manhattan but live in the outer boroughs, so we travel anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour or more each way everyday. I want to move to CT (New Haven County) and I have tried to stay optimistic while reading the posts but I am starting to have second thoughts. I wish more people with good things to say about CT would post more often, so that I can have a more balanced picture. I want feedback on New Haven, East Haven, West Haven, Wolcott, Naugatuck, Waterbury, Manchester, Hartford, Bloomfield, Berlin. For all you real estate knowledgeables, I would like information on up and coming neighborhoods (I think you refer to them as transitionals). I may consider purchasing in that type of neighborhood. I am not interested in any area that has passed its peak unless its on the come up again. I am looking at 5 years down the road and would like to buy low and sell high. Also, what areas are family oriented with decent schools?

My wife grew up in CT.and I in indiana. We Met in florida and went back to Ct. to live.We now live in
El Paso TX.The problem in CT for us was the insanity. It seemed that the whole state runs purely on politics of popularity. The locals decide how they want to live and the police inforce that decision. If they decide they want drugs legal and you call the PD on drug dealers the police begin a systematic plan of harrassment to try to run you out or arrest the complaintant. If you dont agree with the mainstream preasure is applied to make you concied. It is libertarianism and since CT is a very small state it can succeed in cutting its residants of from outside help and the truth. No Where in the US is like CT.WE LIVE IN PEACE IN EL PASO TX |

So you say your problem is insanity? After reviewing your post, I agree. I just hope you brought enough of that Kool-Ade you've been drinking for everyone. |

CASE IN POINT JONES
It is insane to dismiss provable facts. I have paper work and Proof it has been dealt with by the government and the guilty partys are in prison. It is sad that most of CT is Insane,in denial or part of the illegal happenings in that state. And no where is like CT>Every where else is pretty sane. |
|
Becausse they are stuck here. Where can they go? For too many it's a family issue. I don't know where you would go. Those places you describe are all inner city. If that's what you want go ahead. Most of the people in New Haven are either rich or poor. The rich live in nice houses and their taxes are used to subsidize the poor. You are not going to get any good real estate deals in the towns you described. It's all built up and the real estate agents, like everyone else, only drive up the prices to make the big bucks. |

We stay 5 months in Voluntown. Its a beautiful area. Most people seem to work at the casino's there.Houses are high & they have property taxes also.I think you could commute easily to other cities that offer decent pay if the Casino's not for you.On the other hand We have our primary home in SC its only worth 160k & taxes are $800.00 annually. We do have property taxes.Thats how were able to afford CT. |

Coming from Jim Jones-thats rich |

Home is where the heart is. I lived in CT for many many years, and yes it has many pretty country towns, but the state has nothing more than that to offer. Travel to stores, travel to malls, travel to work that you are stuck in because there are not many other choices. Take that brave step and move on to a place that will give you more and better opportunities.

I left CT for good in 1993. Tired of the 'fakes' and the have/have not differences. I'v elived all over this country, and although I like the closeness of cities, family and social lifestyle of CT, I did not like the cost of living. How sad it is that folks who grew up there have to scrimp and save in order to afford housing, if they ever get enough money for down payment that is.
Housing is the downfall. I don't see much else that is cheaper. The education, the medical services, and such, yes, the northeast has it beat. But give me the south, where my paycheck is worth something anyday! |

Do you suffer from psychosis? "Psychosis (not to be confused with psychopathy) is a generic psychiatric term for a mental state in which thought and perception are severely impaired. Persons experiencing a psychotic episode may experience hallucinations, hold delusional beliefs (e.g., grandiose or paranoid delusions), demonstrate personality changes and exhibit disorganized thinking. This is often accompanied by lack of insight into the unusual or bizarre nature of such behaviour, difficulties with social interaction and impairments in carrying out the activities of daily living. A psychotic episode is often described as involving a "loss of contact with reality". The American Heritage Stedman's Medical Dictionary defines psychosis as "A severe mental disorder, with or without organic damage, characterized by derangement of personality and loss of contact with reality and causing deterioration of normal social functioning." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychosis Kool-Aid for all! |

Is it me or does it always come down to insulting someone? I thought we were all adults here. I like reading the feedback on CT both good and bad and I will take the information, do my own investigation and form my own opinion but there is no need to bully anyone whose opinion is different than anyone else's. It gets to be so cornball after a while. We don't have to agree with one another and we can argue our points vehemently but please, let's leave the personal attacks, the insults to intelligence and the dramatic license off the posts. If you don't like what someone has to say it's your right and you can express that in a way that in a less malicious way. It is simply not cool.

I agree Ivy. There seems to be a lot of people here just looking for someone to be combative with. I think it's called being a TROLL. |
