GEUS - Worst in Texas

Greenville, TX

According to a report from the Texas Municipal League, GEUS has the lowest overall performance score of any utility in the state of Texas. The report included measurables of customer service, average cost of electricity including all fees and add-ons, reliability and community commitment.

Actually I think the Herald Banner reports they have one of the lowest rates!

Interesting. Do you have a link to this report?

The stuff in the Herald Banner doesn't include all the late fees, deposits, and other things tacked on. What they do is have an extra short due date on the residential bills so that those least able to pay on time get hit with a late fee. Sometimes you get a bill and it is due only two days later or you have to pay the late fee. This is deliberate. But the big customers like L-3 and Rubbermaid get a lower rate and more time to pay. Absolutely an outrage. We need an Occupy GEUS movement!

Actually, the newspaper did do several stories on the number of customer complaints relating to GEUS.
GEUS officials explained that one of chief reasons the company was coming down so hard was due to wide number of people who were paying late, using fake names, skipping out on their billings, etc., which was costing the utility tens of thousands of dollars.
Not saying that what they were do was right, but that is how it was explained.

So right. They hit you with a late fee and if they get you a couple of those they make you come up more deposit. All stacked againt the working man so the big dogs get a deal. Surprised this is even getting talked about cause they got the lid on it. Somebody is taking all these late fees home in their pocket.

Another way they are screwing us is that the electric and water is paid in arrears, but cable and Internet is paid IN ADVANCE. Yet if you are late, they charge the late fee on the TOTAL BALANCE. So you are paying a late fee for a service that you are paying for in advance! Someone with money please file a class action lawsuit and make these b*stards straighten up and fly right!

Local dude, don't be naive. They WANT people to pay late so they can charge the late fee. That is why is due so much sooner than say ATT or Atmos. They are trying to trigger the late fees and deposits. By the way, they have it to where they keep the deposits forever. If you are late once in any 24 month period then you never get the deposit back. That's why they "make a mistake" every so often and the bill is due a day or two after it is mailed. Or if you move out of town before 24 months is up you never get your money back. What are they doing with this money???

It's called CAPITALISM welcome to America! Pay it, live with it, and die broke! That way the rich get richer. It's what they call "The American Way".

yeah, but GEUS is supposed to be "publicly owned." However, this has become a farce because they got special legislation passed that essentially set them up as their own fiefdom. They seemingly answer to no one. What needs to happen is to open up the market so that other power companies can come in and compete. Otherwise they have us by the n*ts.

Again, I'd love to see the report Kenneth is referring to, as I can find no record of it online. Just want to know how to find it so I can read it for myself. But, just playing devils advocate here, suppose the Greenville market is opened up, what reason is there to think anybody else that comes in here is going to do things any differently? Do you think that a made-for-profit utility, which relies primarily on natural gas and nuclear plants, are going to be any more reasonable in covering their power costs or covering their debts than a municipally-owned utility which relies primarily on coal? Me, personally, I have never had a problem with GEUS. Yes, my bills tend to be high, but I can't say that anyone using the amount of electricity I do anywhere else in Texas is going to be paying any less. There is no way to make an apples to apples comparison, as each utility has a different rate structure and different ways of setting up the fees they charge to cover purchased power, transmission costs, etc. Plus, if I do have a problem, the corporate offices are a half-mile away, instead of being in Dallas, or Houston or Lubbock or wherever. In short, there is no guarantee that getting somebody else in here is going to make things any different.

Sharlette, you are better off with Time Warner. GEUS sucks in every way and they have gotten themselves in so much debt that the city cannot sell it. We are stuck with an albatross. They promote that they are publicly owned, but they are not community oriented. They stick it to you with late fees, increased deposits and high prices - and then we have some of the worst service and jury-rigged, crooked power poles all over town. They are ugly inside and out.

Huh. I really don't get all the outrage. I even switched back TO GEUS from Time Warner (for cable and Internet) for better service, price, and customer service, all of which I have found better at GEUS.
