I have read where we may have as many as 4 candidates running for Judge of District Court in Hunt County this time. Does anyone know anything about the candidates?

So far, the incumbent Judge Richard Beacom, attorney Keith Willeford and attorney Ray Hopson have announced they are going to file.
Filing begins November 28.

Is it true Willeford plans to run as a Republican?

Yes. All of the candidates who have announced have said they would file for the GOP primary.

It would be helpful to know some of the pros and cons to each candidate so we could make an educated decision. Perhaps this would be a good forum for such a list.

Not that much of a surprise that all of the judge candidates are running in the Republican primary, given how the county has been voting primarily GOP the past few election cycles.
The paper has been posting the candidate's campaign announcements verbatim on a space available basis as they come in, and the paper will also be hosting a forum before the March primaries. As for any further analysis, we will probably want to wait until after the filing period is over and see who actually files first.

It looks like we have 3 candidates running for District Judge - one incumbent and 2 challengers. Does anyone have any recommendations, pros/cons to consider?

Beacom is the best choice by far. The only one without a hidden agenda.

The best a voter can hope for is a Judge that is honest, fair and does not play favorites.

Should be. I would like to see a heavily researched article on the candidates in all elections in Greenville and Hunt County. The submissions by the candidates are simplistic and somewhat pandering. Their records should be researched and shared with readers to be fair to voters. It would also be nice to hear how recently elected officials are faring. Perhaps focusing on how often new judges pass potentially controversial (i.e. murder) or time-consuming cases to other judges. I mean, when they're not out campaigning for other candidates.

The only cases that I know of which have been transferred between judges occurred when the recently elected judge, who was an ADA and had prosecuted the defendant previously, took office.

Beacom ran as a Democrat last time and switched parties after Leonard got beat. His largest contributor on his campaign is Holly Gocher (attorney who works only in divorce). Fairly sure that was in the local paper. Makes a person question whats up when the largest contributor is an attorney who brings him lots of his "business." So switches parties and takes contributions from local attorneys sounds a little shady.

Do some research. All judges, DA's, CA's, etc. take donations from local defense attorneys. It's called politics. You have to appease the defense bar or you'll never make it.

Beacom is pretty liberal. I think he used to brag about that until he changed parties.
