San Antonio man spared jail time for arson, insurance fraud

KERRVILLE — A San Antonio man who torched his Harper-area home on March 21 and then filed a fraudulent insurance claim for more than $200,000 was sentenced this week to 10 years deferred adjudication, records show.
Phillip L. Lovin, 47, had faced up to 99 years in jail on each of the two first-degree felony charges but, if he completes the probation terms successfully, will be spared convictions in the cases under the plea deal.

Noting Lovin lost his home valued at $150,000, District Attorney Amos Barton said of the plea bargain Friday,“He assessed his own fine. I think that's kind of poetic.”

The unoccupied home was destroyed in the blaze fueled by hay, gasoline, flares and a Christmas tree that Lovin put in its attic and ignited.

Barton said an even more favorable plea deal would likely be offered to Lovin's codefendant, Shawn R. Lorance of New Braunfels, who cooperated with investigators. Lorance, 30, was indicted Aug. 2 on arson and insurance fraud charges.
