Arcanum's dirty little secret

For years growing up any person in Darke county has probably heard or experience the Arcanum attitude. People from there seemed to just be born with their noses a bit up in the air. Now in the past week we see that the good people of Arcanum are trying to run a bi racial couple and their children out of town. Is this 2008 or 1968? The front page story in the Dayton Daily News is and ought to be a shameful thing to the citizens of that town. The fact that even today there are that many racists, especially young ones still in school is sickening. It is far past time to tear down the curtain of prejudice and the shroud of superiority the residents have hidden behind for so long.

Do a little research, see how many years wonderful "Dad" has spent in prison for scams, B&E, Burglary and theft. I agree, racism is a terrible thing, however I don't believe everthing I hear, especially when it comes from his mouth.

It simply amazes me sometimes when I take a look on here to see actual news and community concerns to only be embarrassed of the "society" I live in. Personally I could care less that the father spent time in prison, it has no bearing that the young boy was harrassed with racial remarks in a public school. Did he do something to bring it about, who knows and it makes no difference to the epitaths or actions of others. The father seems to love his children enough to take the matter in his own hands. A strike to him to the whole situation and he apparently needs to be reminded the he is an adult regardless if the parents of these High School boys do not wish to show the world that they are either. However, to bring up a point that he has a criminal record has nothing to do with what happened to his son, the sanctity of their home being violated and the dignity to a otherwise nice community being tarnished.

Im not a member of your community but looking in, Im amazed. Yes, even as a non-member of your community I have a right to say my opinion, worry about the concerns of your community next to mine, because my kids play sports there from time to time at the High School, Your children come to my childs school to play sports, our children regardless of the distance interact at this age through friends of friends and relatives and my family drives through your community as you do mine.
I cnat believe that the good people of Arcanum that I know or anyone there doesnt belive in the basic right to dignity in a world already too dramatic on people to have issues like this develop and lay on our childrens shoulders and our communities when both are already hard pressed.

My god, do you people who post on here read yourselves after doing so. From the rhetoric used on here I hope that your truly not as ignorant as you sound or such have no christian faith left in you to lay such words on another.
A forum such as this should be used to ask why and offer a hand in solace to help, not to slander and ridicule.
I must admit, the sad thing that may be worse is that not only are some of these posts probabley from my community or another looking in but by actions of a few both sets of kids never had a chance, a chance to see their parents and community remind them what being a man means and to be better than what theyve been shown these past few weeks. Instead they have those of you on here typing hatred, running the streets painting houses, and seeking revenge for the sake of your children on anothers.

I grew up attending Arcanum Elementary, Butler, and High School. Do I know what the first poster means about the Arcanum attitude, absolutely. It is a different kind of place, not bad but different. One of the biggest thing I hate about Arcanum is the racism. Everyone knows it is a racist town, frankly I don't know why anyone who wasn't' white would want to live there because of the inevitable persecution. I remember a couple of Black people who did live there, I don't remember any messages such as these back then. But something I do remember is, something like 7 or 8 years ago give or take a couple years some garage sales got robbed during Old Fashion Days and the immediate response of several members of the community was that they were sure it was the black carnival workers and they actually wanted to request that only white carnival workers be sent to their community. Growing up in a family where the 'N' word is not even in our vocabulary the racist attitudes of some community members do not sit well with me.

This man having a criminal record has nothing to do with it, plenty of communities have plenty of citizens with criminal records *hush...even Arcanum*. Why aren't they running out those white boys with criminal records?

Fortunately in this country you do not get to pick and choose who can live in your town. Do not try to excuse racism and hate. Too many people in this county know the history and attitude of Arcanum. I am not excusing anyones criminal past, but unless they are commiting crimes currently you have NO right to use the past against anyone. Where did the high school kids learn the attitudes many of them have towards minorities? How come Greenville does not have this sort of thing happening? Time to join the 21st century people.

very well said...and YES, his criminal past DOES matter....this is the same way he was in Union City but I think "He is a criminal" was being nice and NOT listing everything he's been in trouble for. Criminals deserve a second chance, and yes a third chance in some cases, but please, he is a continuous criminal. Don't bring it into a small community such as Arcanum then try to smear their name as a prejudice town. Even Greenville's very prejudice w/ an overwhelming amount of criminal activity. Mr. Dillon, take your problems to a BIG CITY....see if you get as much attention there...!!!
