Ok everyone. Lets have all our coal miners quit their jobs. move in with our family members. Cause we will lose our homes. Go on welfare and get medical cards cause we will lose our insurance. Dont forget food stamps cause our kids cant starve. And forget about retirement cause we wont have our 401 k. But thats ok cause we want to honor those picket liners. Come on now wtf do u expect us to do. I come from a long line of coal miners and I dont think none of them r over paid whoever said they were u r crazy. Butt there is nothing else around here so really what r the coal miners here supposed to do.
What a joke

That pay range figures out to $33 to $38 per hour. There ain't a SCAB mines no where that pays that kind of money. You gotta go to TVA or KU to make that kinda money.

You better thank the UMWA. This union made your high salary possible.

You mean higher taxes and dues, more mining regulations, mining permits, EPA regs, mines closing and moving to Austrailia, china and south america due to greedy fat cat union bosses. For all that you can thank the UMWA. Thankfully the free market and non union mines made a way back in this part of the state to give people with nothing more than a high school diploma an no experience the chance to make twice more than a college grad. For that, you can thank the NON-union workers.

It don't add up to you because obviously you never worked over 40 hours in a week. Some of us are happy to have overtime.

Let me correct your dumb a$$ thoroughly. If you work for a non-union mines you are smart as hell and just as much a miner as anyone. No fat union bosses to scrape 10% off the top of your salary. Union membership has fell like a rock over the last 20 years. Its barely over 10% now. So get with the program. You are in the minority now.

Unfortunately, this new generation is having to pay the dumb fuckin mistakes the last generation made by driving mining and manufacturing out of this county. Look at Detroit. Was the biggest union city in the country. Everybody was doing great with big bloated union salaries for a few years. Now look at it.

I know its hard to wrap your little brain around, but our miners are competing globally with mines in china and brazil. If were not competitive...the jobs are gone, and your electricity bill goes through the roof. You think they have unions running around telling them they should demand 100 thousand per year with benefits...hellllll no.

I don't know any poor coal miners. So that negates the pro-union argument of pay. Then these morons bring up non-union mine safety. Even though unions have decreased, safety has increased. http://www.kentucky.com/2013/01/31/2498260/us...

Then there is the issue of pensions. What many retirees don't seem to understand is that many years ago, instead of paying higher wages or better benefits, unions and politicans devised a scam. They decided to promise people a great retirement; what did it matter to them that 40 years down the road there would be NO MONEY to pay these pensions. For all those years the union bosses and politicans lined there pockets knowing the workers they were scamming would get screwed someday. To pay for broken pension funds, it's now the tax payers that get screwed.

If you made 76000 dollars and make 25.50 an hour then either way you are severely overpaid!
Anybody can mine coal period! It's not a skill, it's a job. You must never see your family either working all the time.

$25.50 an hour is $53k per year based on a 40 hr. week, which is also again the same wage that was being paid in the mid 80s so you are also living there to get to the 70s. I would also not brag too much about thinking you make more than everyone else in the county like most miners do, somebody will end up hurting your feelings. This is not a stab at miners, thank God for em, just stop bragging..

"I" didn't ruin the union years ago - The mentality of some union workers years ago is what left such a bad taste in peoples mouths, and some of it for good reason. Unions today (at least around here, not going to speak for other places) accomplish an entirely different outcome. They are not designed so people can sit on their butt and not do their job - matter of fact, the union will not protect anyone now if they do something stupid and lose their job. They are in place as a negotiating tool between the workers and management. The union does not control anything or set any "here's how it's going to be rules, like it or not". This is a different time. Get out of the stone age way of thinking people.
