If it is against the law not to wear seat belts..Why isn't it against the law to ride in the truck beds? I hope that this wasn't a child.

Because the State of NC has no common sense in the laws.

A precious 19 year old young mans life hangs in the balance because of poor choices-I have cried a flood of tears as I visited him and pray for his family whom I love. These same kind of choices cost me my 18 year old nephew and 3 of his friends 3 years ago. Families get devastated and we must rely on God to walk through it with us. Morgan we love you, and are asking God for a miracle! If only we would slow down and think. there are consequences to everything we do-good or bad! I'd rather have the good!

that's why you don't ride in the back of a truck DUH. people or dogs should never ride in the back. it's just dangerous.

It is against the law in north carolina, unless you are over the age of 16 and it is within the duties of farm work in rural areas, which this clearly was not.

It is state law that no one uder the age of 16 can ride in an open bed such as a pick-up truck without an at least 16 yr old in the bed of the pick-up with them, now that's the law... you are angered that such a law exists... well let me inform you that this is a new law less than 10 yrs. old, before anyone could ride in the back of any age so we have come a long way, it would be wise for you to campaign against any child or animal to be transported in the bed area for common sense and death risk... so good luck.
But..... this story has a real difference, in that the driver Kory Michael Fischer, 21, was charged for DWI and felony serious injury by vehicle. Fischer was given a bond of $51,000. What a sad reminder of young people and their ability to handle a vehicle.

Thank you for the info..The reason that I asked is because I have seen people riding in the back of trucks, actually in town. I wondered why they were allowed to.

No matter the fault, two young mens lives have been ruined due to thinking "it won't happen to me". My heart breaks for Reiss and his family. Although I agree the other young man needs to face criminal charges we must keep in mind that this too is someones child and his family is heartbroken as well. May God comfort and keep you Reiss and your family. We are all praying and believing for a miracle.

This really hurts me. I dont understand why people would risk their lives and others driving drunk. In a matter of seconds your whole life can change. I went to school with these boys and it breaks my heart to know that reiss's life has been cut short. My prayers go out to the payne family in this very hard time. I can't even begin to imagine the pain you are going through. Rest in peace reiss.

Where in the world does it say Kory was doing 60mph and drifting? He was doing 35mph according to the police report. What he did was wrong.
