I think it is a great idea, more school systems should do this. The kids of this generation do things in class we would have never dreamed of. Some even have sex among other things, someone needs to change their behavior.

Thanks to no child left behind, school districts are pressured to perform. The poor districts need more help not less. The community suffered a blow financially and it does affect how parents can care for their children. If their wages are less therefore they work more jobs, then who is home to help the children with instruction? I hope that there are more resources to help the school with the change. What good will it do if the teachers aren't trained in this kind of gender specific and the text books are not really used or completed at the end of the year's instruction. Learning should morph into practical applications, computer, technology, and experimentation and exposure to careers outside of their town, state, nation.

Why would the teachers have a problem with single sex schools. If the girls and boys are more focused on learning and obtaining a good education they would have a better chance of earning a living. But there would have to be things put in place for their socialization. Would this cause them not not know how to intereact with the opposite sex?.More incidents of sexual crimes?

I live in Greene county and there is NO way I would send my child to Public School here. I have read all the nonsense in the newspaper against the latest change, they are even publishing letters to the editor from students. Until Parents learn that education starts AT HOME nothing will change and Greene County schools will continue to be at the bottom of the state list for test scores. Wake up greene county!

I'm originally from the UK, quite a lot of schools are boys or girls only. not just classes, but the entire school building campus. for example you'll have "Carshalton High school for Boys", "Carshalton High school for Girls" , "Wallington High school for Boys" etc etc. seems to work fine there.
no it really doesnt in fact its alot worse.
more girls were pregnaunt in that school than the school i go to now.
yet saying that stanley park is in that area its even worse bishipford is the 2nd worst school in the country its mixed bt blenheim is one of the top rated it doesnt depend on gender it jst makes it alot less bitchy in a mixed school than in a single sex school. the school itself is calmer
alot less homophobia too
at the end of the day it should be up to the children what school they attend not the goverment and it should stay that way

When my shy, almost introvert daughter was getting ready to start middle school I was scared to death. I knew she would be eaten alive in public co-ed school. I'd seen it with my friends children. That's why we researched and found a girls private school in our area. They tailor the learning style to girls, and girls aren't afraid to speak up in class when the over-competitive, dominant boys aren't around. When I see my daughters old classmates, they look like 16 year olds not 12 year olds. No thanks.
And I'm not a boy hater either, my son will hopefully attend a boys school when he is old enough. They will tailor to his learning style and he won't have girls to distract him from learning. He can be competitive.
I'm in north georgia and am eagerly waiting for single sex public schools to start here!!

you need to do something. our kids have been out of control for awhile. And please stop demanding medication for our kids from the schools! Drugs are not the answer. Maybe this will work. I went to a private girls school as a child. Some of the best education of my life. Uniforms are are good too!

<quoted text>OH THEY ARE DOING THAT ALSO! WE ARE SUCH A "POOR" SYSTEM THAT EVERY CHILD GET FREE BREAKFAST AND LUNCH, BUT THEY EXPECT EVERYONE TO BUY UNIFORMS. GO FIGURE!
I bet that they all find a way to afford new FUBU jackets, hair extensions and a cell phone, yet they get free lunch and breakfast...

Didn't we go through this already? sounds like another episode of separate but equal. Only a matter of time before one of them complains that the other is getting a better education.

That's why the uniforms would be good. No more of this having to try to out law lowrider, too short skirts, etc. My son is in private boot camp and he wears a uniform. Saves a ton of aggravation. they have plenty of time to shock people after they are 18 and OUT of our houses. My building even tries to monitor clothes lately. Wait till they see what they have to answer to as adults!

Yeah uniforms aren't so bad. some people say it suppresses creativity, but ya can still spike your hair, have an afro, etc.

lol - somehow generations of private school kids that have had to wear uniforms have managed to be productive creative members of society... I don't think creativity is limited by the external clothes that one wears. If anything, it could help promote creative expression in other similar arenas - creative arts, music, theater, writing, etc. I wore a uniform through elementary school and then in high school, and managed to get through it. It really is only a big deal to the parents who have not had to wear uniforms. Once they realize how much simpler it is to cloth their child, I can't imagine any complaints. And, it really is an effective way to eliminate those self-conscious feelings than an otherwise intelligent boy or girl might feel about calling attention to his/herself by participating in class while wearing clothing that might not be quite right.

Remember - school is to learn, to be educated, not a fashion parade.:)

they're not worried about learing styles. they're worried about students having sex at school and the pregnancy rate and the fact that how some girls dress can distract male students from their school work. greene county has fired too many of their truly great teachers.

even with uniforms, there's still competition by the way hair and nails are done. purses and book bags, where their clothes came from. AND uniforms supress indivituality

"Research shows that when boys and girls are separated, each group performs better in school and is more likely to go to college, said Julie Ancis, a professor in the school of education at Georgia State University."

The above quote sounds like a good reason to separate them according to gender. BTW, stop all free and assisted breakfasts and lunches at schools. These parents get food stamps and should be preparing meals for their own children.
