Well after you have $250,000 structure burns down then I think a paid fire would be cheap.
that $250,000 structure was saved and can be repaired but an insurance company will come in and say its cheaper to rebuild then repair it.Also there was three fire departments on scene and 1 standing by covering the rest of centerport.1 of the fire departments on scene was there to rescue any firefighters that may become lost or trapped , so people should really think about what they write before they sound even more ignorant than they are.

I guess you are a volunteer and miss my point entirely. Try this. How many homes are lost to fires on Long Island each year. How many would receive less damage if response time was faster (paid FD in the fire house ready to go) that is the figure to work with.

No i do get your point ,my point is that it has to do more with the type of construction if the house is destroyed or saved .Remember alot of urban buildings the contents only burn in the suburbs the actual structure burns.Centerport was very fast to respond on sunday and it would not have made a difference if they were paid or not.And yes i am a volunteer and yes i am also a paid firefighter who has seen houses burn to the ground in the city and houses saved on long island .

Also you refer to having paid firefighters ready to respond do you think those 75 firefighters or even 25 firefighters would be responding from 1 firehouse? Of course not they would be responding from 4-7 firehouse's depending on staffing which would also mean they are coming from further away which may mean more damage to the structure

The Suffolk County police have 18 police on duty from midnight to eight AM in the TOH. Do you think 18 firefighters on duty could handle the entire TOH during this same time? How much taxes do you pay for Suffolk PD every year? You will be paying the same amount per firefighter that you pay per policeman but you will need more firefighters. Good luck boys and girls, you won't be able to afford your taxes here if that ever happens.

A life is a life. I'm glad they put in the effort to save the kitty. At least I can still read some good stuff in the news.

Why do the firefighters get kudos for saving the cat? Would anyone ever consider just leaving the cat in the house to burn to death? it is my understanding that the fire was already out before they got the cat out. Now, if one of the homeowners was outside as the house was in complete flames, that their cat was inside, and a firefighter went to save a cat or a dog, then they deserve a medal./

You're an idiot for responding to them.
