I'm stressing over how to cope with the elderly and Dementia. I am currently the primary caretaker of an individual, non-family member, whom has Parkinsons, and Dementia... I can handle most days but when they seem to target my special needs child an verbally attack, I get defensive QUICK. I know that half of the time these episodes are NOT Dementia related and are simply the individual lashing out because they can't have their home and life and son (who's in jail for who knows how long)... Nursing home/respite is virtually a non-existent option because of the financial situation the son has created since being placed as the Power of Attorney over financial and medical decisions of his parent the past 6 years (and taken advantage of)...

I need advice on how to deal, if there is any useful information or classes that I can try... And suggestions about what techniques I can use to defuse the behaviors once they begin without this person physically attacking me....

My sympathies for your situation. Have you looked for support groups online? I have a friend who was able to find a really sincere ahd helpful support group for a specific need, and maybe you can too. If the son is in jail, perhaps the state should step in and begin the procedures necessary to remove his POA so that other care options would become feasible. I wish you the best in your endeavor.

Thank you. I spoke with a social services lady who was assigned to her case prior to her moving in with me. She said they do not get involved in the legalities of it, only imminent harm issues.:( I am going to the courthouse first thing Tuesday morning to check on where to start to apply for Conservatorship. There is a class for caregivers to understand dementia and a support group for caregivers and family of numerous issues, I'm just not sure when and where or how to begin looking. I know a lot about services offered for children bc of my two with special needs but the elderly is a different story... I don't want to feel like I've failed her but I'm loosing all hope that I may maintain any sanity by the time this is all said and done.:(

I'm glad you have found some starting points to see what can be done to change the state of this person's situation, as well as your own. Good luck to you.
