So this is how the system works. Break the law and everyone turns a blind eye. Even the organizations that raise money from donations vowing to protect the historical integrity of our town! Don't ask me for any more money!

I think the house looks great. You can't tell if windows are wood or vinyl from the road. Lots of homes on Main Street have vinyl windows. Why are other houses ok? They could put those ugly storm window over the new then you all would fuss about that. Mr Hankins didn't even show up for the tour to see the windows. He is ahead of that old cabin being completely tore down up the street. I bet it will have new windows. Those windows will be there longer than we will be on this earth. stop being negative and be glad someone is fixing down town up. Mrs. Daniels apologized. It's done. They should put a big neon sign on the house like HZC let them put on Capital bank. That, I don't understand. Mr Hankins should take that money he got from UT and fix down town up.
Agreed.

They are SAVING this old house. It costs a lot to fix up such a place. I say quit yer bitchin and leave them alone. It's going to be their home, not a museum so they must be practical in the restoration.

Was it practical to take out an interior wall and place a old church window where a 2 ft brick wall once stood? You can defend their action till the end of time but she as main street chairwoman and he as mayor of our "fair" town should be setting the example for the rest of us by doing what is right.

they had to destroy the village to save it, is that the all american theme of history and management? your small knowledge of preservation is showing. your scant acquaintance with original and rare (for g'ville, unique) beauty and design is showing. join the historical zoning commission or heritage trust or Main street g'ville, you'd be quite welcome and among friends. Are there any 19th century windows remaining in g'ville? if so, those organizations can help you find them, take them to the dump and install vinyl. it's good for business. brings money to main street. there's a 19th century house for sale in the 300 block of N Main. Please do a tear down as soon as possible and build a mcmansion in the style of the 19th century or any century, or a replica of something that Andrew Johnson once saw in a drunken dream. We need more fakery on Main, the bigger the better. brings in the tourists and the PR travel writers. g'ville's longstanding love affair with the false and shiny new expensive object cannot be stopped.

Since YOU are an expert in restoration, and are SO concerned about it, why didn't YOU buy the house and restore it properly, according to YOUR ideas on how it should have been done?

You DIDN'T, they DID and are doing the town a favor by saving that old house from ruin. Their preservation of that house is better than your doing nothing but whining about whether they are doing it right or not.

Find something else to bitch about.

If we wanted a true historic renovation, why not make her finish her plans as written, before she ran out of money? Yes, they didnt even put heat and air-conditioning in the whole house, even though they gutted it for that, because they ran out . Planning and zoning needs to take another look.

The last couple of years haS not been to good for the Daniel's. First, Green Bank went down and his stock as a board member hit rock bottom. Second, he lost his salary as a board member and third Andy buys an old house without obtaining estimates to renovate it. I do'nt care how much money they may have, it can quickly dwindle if you have more going out than coming in.

These acts open the door wide for a full investigation of official misconduct.
Mayor Danies and Alderwoman Webster both failed miserably their oarhs of office and in their responsibility to uphold and defend the ordinances of the Town of Greeneville!
What a discredit to all those who have worked for years to protect this beautiful little town.
But who in G'ville would investigate the mayor and his wife? No one. They can change the historic district to suit their tastes and interests, they can support projects like the Walters State destruction of the Civil War era George Jones house, and they can completely ignore recommended preservation standards:

The historic zoning commission seems to be corrupt, a public relations facade constructed of shoddy material. Take a look at Antrim, what's left of it, if you have any doubt.

andy daniels, the house looks great. if hankins and the rest of the histerical commission does not like the windows please put the old storm windows back on it, put the ugly boxwoods back in place, and put the old leaky roof back on the house. Just return it to its condition that is was prior to you purchasing it. see how the histerical commission likes that.
it is my understanding that none of the histerics live within the zone. it is easy for the to tell other people how to spend their own private money. step up roger hankins a pay for the orginial windows.
andy d. YOUR are the women. thank you for making the house beautiful.
roger hankins, stick it in your orfice

If I was Mr. Hankins I would'nt have shown up either. She lied to the commission because she knew she would get away with it. She should be ashamed. The town of Greeneville needs to abolish the commission because it no longer serves a purpose. If she was'nt willing to play by the rules/ordinaces then she should have never bought the house in the first
place.

. Why are you getting so upset? Roger Hankins did the right thing by asking questions. Don't make him the bad guy. If Mayor Daniels would do what is right no one would be critical of him and wife Andy. But they ignored the law. Where they above the law? Why not change the law if it is so restrictive? It should have been reviewed but no they were bull headed and now the people are upset.

The citizens of Greeneville should never trust them again. I have known the Daniels for years but no longer trust or respect them. What in the hell were they thinking? He's the mayor and she is the first lady of Greeneville. Did they really believe no one would care?
