You got that right. Those tough torque transmissions are not too dependable.

More expensive lawn tractors have bigger, dependable Tuff Torq transmissions. Cheap lawn tractors are cheap because they have cheap parts. Buy a good quality lawn tractor, and not the bottom of the line mower, and it will outlast 3-5 of the cheap ones. People around here will buy a cheap mower from Lowe's, drive it up and down steep hills, and be surprised when they burn up the transmission. When it comes to mowers, you get exactly what you pay for.

Is it really feasible to spend $5,000.00 on a mower when you have a little less than an acre to mow? Are you saying the tuff torq transmissions in the lower line John Deere are non-dependable? The lower line John Deere mowers are still more expensive than the low line other brands(not meaning cub cadet). The one I helped my boss rebuild was on a JD L140. The transmission on that particular mower is really too small for it.

Yes. The trans is too small and cheap on about any mower less than $3,000, unless you have a relatively flat, small yard. If you are mowing hills, or on your mower for more than an hour or so at a time, you will probably burn up the trans on a cheaper mower in 2-4 years . You may get lucky, or you may not.

Some mowers used to last a life time now CEO greed they last just long enough for the warranty to expire then they hope you buy a new one of theirs again .

My JD mower lasted about 10 years then the trans went out the one that came before that was a old Kmart cheap mower that lasted about the same amount of time . The JD service dept said I would have to buy a new transmission and pay dealer service cost for them to put it in . John Deere used to make good products you could count on .
