A 911 dispatcher pleaded with a nurse at a Bakersfield, Calif., senior living facility to save the life of an elderly woman by giving her CPR, but the nurse said policy did not allow her to, according to a newly released audiotape of the call.
"Is there anybody there that's willing to help this lady and not let her die?" the dispatcher asked in a recording of the 911 call released by the Bakersfield Fire Department.

"Not at this time," the nurse said.

The incident unfolded on Tuesday when 87-year-old Lorraine Bayless collapsed at Glenwood Gardens, a senior living facility in Bakersfield.

In the seven-minute, 16-second recording, the nurse told the dispatcher it was against the facility's policy for employees to perform CPR on residents.

With every passing second, Bayless' chances of survival were diminishing. The dispatcher's tone turned desperate.

"Anybody there can do CPR. Give them the phone please. I understand if your facility is not willing to do that. Give the phone to that passerby," the dispatcher said. "This woman is not breathing enough. She is going to die if we don't get this started."

After several minutes, an ambulance arrived and took Bayless to Mercy Southwest Hospital, where she died.

Glenwood Gardens released a statement confirming its policy prohibiting employees from performing CPR

The family knew that was the policy when they put the mother in there. The daughter stated that she has been pleased with the care that her mother has received. It was not an assisted living facility. Morally her actions are debatable but not from the facilities standpoint.

There was no DNR in place. It is their policy to NOT provide assistance to any of their residents. Death panels maybe ?????

Not every goddamn thing is obamas fault... I don't particularly like the guy, but I don't blame him when I piss on the toilet seat...

If they have that policy then you know that up front and can't start bitching and complaining when they don't provide assistance... And death panels is nothing but dumbass far right wing conspiracy bullshit...

Relating to and in regard to the Glenwood Gardens 911/CPR situation, the International Olympics should add a category in which it would award gold medals to the people who over the past four years have engaged in the most extreme examples of stupid and mindless drone type "thinking," and who have been absolutely determined to follow the rules, and no matter how stupid and ridiculous those rules were.

In fact if the directors of the nursing home had instructed the employees that even in the case of a massive fire they themselves were not to attempt to move the residents out of the building, but instead were to wait for firemen and police officers to move the residents out, therefore if the firemen and police officers were very delayed in showing up, agues, and based on the rules set up by the building's management, each of the employees should have just walked out on the lawn, enjoyed a cigarette and an iced tea and observed the fire while the residents burned to death inside.

In regard to the Glenwood Gardens/no CPR situation, we should all learn to be good little mindless drones, since that is exactly what the management of many companies wants.

For example, there was a large office building in San Francisco that regularly blew invisible clouds of asbestos dust all over its tenants, since that drastically reduced the cost of the building's almost constant remodeling projects. In other words, those remdoeling projects would have cost drastically more if the proper and legally required precautions had been used to limit the tenants' exposure to asbestos. However the tenants were so regularly and uncaringly exposed to asbestos by those remodeling projects, that therefore even the asbestos debris they could see, and some of which fell on their chairs, desks, and clothing, they assumed was just ordinary plaster and dust.

However the building's management company, and which was one of the very sleaziest and most organized crime connected businesses in all of SF, declared itself in a "Team Player" letter, and that was shown to employees, to have supervisors of such superior judgement and ethics, that therefore ordinary employees were forbidden to discuss with government building inspectors any of the building's safety and health hazards, but instead to refer any possible issues to management.

So when the buildng eventually went up in flames in a multi million dollar fire at 3AM in the morning, in other words at the standard time for organized crime arranged arson fires in office buildings, and just before CAL OSHA was to do a followup investigation into the building's many asbestos violations, I am sure that if one of the building's lower ranking employees had been nearby and then informed the firemen who showed up that the building they were about to charge into was full of asbestos, the totally corrupt building management company would have taken the position such employee should have been fired for having the gall and the nerve to keep people from getting lung cancer.

You can not have someone who is not certified ACLS run a CODE. These rules have been around for years. I just love how people love to blame Obama for things that have been around for decades. Blame lawyers, it is our sue happy world we live in that help make up some of these laws. If the facility would have done CPR on her and she had died the family would have sued saying a non qualified person killed their mom.

Follow the money.

This was a for profit facility that makes money every time they turn over a unit.

No doubt there is a waiting list to get in.

My beloved Aunt stayed in this Nursing Home for over a year in recovery from a medical situation. The is a very HIGH END Luxury facility not some flea bag whse for the elderly.
The staff's inaction is unbelievable.

Obviously, all that glitters isn't gold.

Lesson for us all. Don't let chandeliers, pleasing infrastructure and well gromed lawns fool you into using any place before asking many many questions.

People need to chill out. The woman was 86 years old. Did she have a DNR order on file? Did she have Dementia? How long before she was found, did she have a feeding tube and wearing diapers, has she been in pain for a long time? Was she in the nursing home for 15 years?

Way too many questions left unanswered. If I had a DNR on file and CPR was preformed, not only would I be ticked off but the nursing home could be sued for not following my orders. People have the right to go out of this world as they please. It's not like she was 25 and not like this doesn't happen ALL THE TIME.

It really scares me when someone in Topix actually makes sense and doesn't sound like someone out of Yahoo.com !!!!!! Great post and nice to see some common sense in here for once.
