I think this woman is the main problem. She needs to be booted out and get a more qualified person for Director of Schools. Of course witha lot less pay also.

Her along with the commissioners, are using every tactic to scare people to get more money. Pure crooks.

i understand that 800,000 of the 1.2 m deficet is for teacher raises and the average salary for teachers is 49,000 and the statment kirk has made about the raises being mandatory is not correct. She needs to go but they just gave her an extension on her contract. The school board with the exception of Austin need to be sent home to but the GDP just keep voting for them.

The average salary of a teacher is not 49,000 unless they have been teaching 20 years or more. You need to get your facts straight.

Teacher contract is for 200 work days or 10 months. Teachers go to college 4-5 years to develop expertise. I think that teachers are worth every dollar that they are paid.

Where do you see the money coming from?? I think the problems were there long before Dr. Kirk coming into he system. Her responses in the paper this week seemed pretty straight forward to me. We got to vote on the wheel tax, we made it clear that won't work, now it's on to something else. And it's not like we can keep working off the same budgets as we have in the past. Economic down turn, inflation, fuel prices, etc. It's going to have to come from somewhere, somehow. Kirk is the Director of Schools, not Director of Fund Raising. I mean no harm, just another opinion.

She has money in a fund for economic downturns. You don't raise taxes in a time like this. You save in good economic times for times like this. If she takes the tax dollars she already has from the good times they were able to save and refuses to use them now, she should give that money back to us too. Tax money is not her money. It belongs to us, the taxpayer!

Let's count now---School is usually out by May 25, teachers don't go back until August 1st or so. Then there is a week for fall break, 2 weeks for Christmas break, a week for spring break. There are very few weeks that my kids are in school for 5 days. Most of the weeks are 4 day weeks. Look at the school calendar. That's at least 3 months off. There are a lot of other people that go to school the same amount of time, and don't get nearly the pay or benefits of your profession. The teachers might have the kids for 165 days after you take out the development days when kids aren't at school. A good teacher is priceless. So are policemen, nurses, farmers, factory workers, etc. But, most people know what they're going to make when they take a job. So why whine whine whine about not getting paid enough for what you do.

You still don't have kids 180 days a year. There are always snow days. Count the days on your school calendar. You get 3 extra days without kids for the snow days you usually don't use all of.Let's do get the facts right.

I get so tired of explaining this but here goes. The snow days are built into the calendar. Basically what that means is each school day is longer to make up for any time that must be missed due to snow. If those snow days are not used, teachers are not compensated for the extra time they work.

Most teachers find that their job cannot be accomplished in the hours that they are paid to work. Therefore they stay late, come in early, and often work weekends. Those that go home take work home with them. The majority of teachers spend many hours during the summer months planning for the next school year.

Some people get into teaching because they mistakenly think that teachers work 9 months a year and work from 8 until 3. Those people do not last in the profession. After about a year or two they look for another job.

Dr. Kirk is an asset to our school system. For many her salary may look inflated. She could make a lot more by going to another school system. I would not blame her if she did. Most of you who have commented on this thread would snap if you had to work her hours.

We are living in tough economic times and must make tough decisions. Teachers have been required to go several years without a raise. How pathetic it would be if the teachers in our community were eligible for welfare, yet this is where we are heading. We already have had several good teachers who have left to find better paying jobs elsewhere. Many teachers must work extra jobs to pay their bills. This takes away from the planning and time they were spending in their classrooms.

In the end it will not be just the children who suffer. It will be all of us, because they are our future.

If you do not like what your teachers do for you the home school. You do not want that because most want baby sitters. These people actually try to develop your child intellectually, emotionally, and provide structure. When the kids go home it is often watching people argue, watch TV, etc.If being a teacher is so good, then educate yourself and be one. It is not what some think it is, and I imagine it to be very stressful. Teachers are employees just like most people commenting on this site. Very few of you go to work without complaining, work a true 8 hours a day, and then help educate your own child. If your being honest, and you are complaining about the teacher then look at yourself. The real education should be coming from home and it is obvious that most who respond to this site do not show respect.

quite frankly i think people who pick up our trash and haul off are worth just as much. you can't put the amount of education as a price on how much someone is worth sister. dr. kirk thinks she has the answer to all our prayers just because she has a degree. a degree in stupidity if you ask me. she does not have a heart. jones is going to get rid of her fast. don't you just love all the fun they are having with this. men are smarter.

The pathetic & un-educated mindset of this county is showing thanks to this debate. If all of the good teachers were to leave today, and "not-so-good" teachers were brought in, we would hear these ignorant parents complain about the teachers not beefing "good enough"

It's simple jealousy, the people in the school system have worked hard and proved themselves worthy of the job. You ignorant fools on the side-lines who are un-educated simply are jealous. Yet you want these school officials to cater to the needs of YOUR CHILDREN! Keep your fucked up kids at home if you think you can do better. I don't want them around my kids.

You are entitled to your opinion. I'm glad that Greene County has it's public schools as well as private schools...parents that home school kudos to you too! It will take alot of community, parent, and education support to raise the next generation of kids! Pray for Dr. Kirk & all our public officials...
