I have to say I am very disapointed in what this buisness has turned into. A few years ago when they opened the resturant was a nice place, but now it seems the tables have turned. The downtown branched is managed by Tara who is amazing, if only she owned both. I have no complaints about the downtown location, but when it comes to the Tusculum loction it's a different story.
In the passed few months the quality of the food has became horrible. The owner, Tom Weaver is always screaming and complaining about something, as well as humiliating his waitresses and his poor little mexican woman he has cooking. This man has no idea how to run a buisess, I'm very suprised the place has been open this long. I have saw so many very good waiters and waitresses that he has fired for no reason go in and out of the resturant. This man has fired girls for not flirting back with him!
After talking with a few employees and ex employees about why and how this once good resturant became what it is today I will never again eat there or for that matter give them any kind of buisness.
The better buisness bureau & the health department have been called numerious times, but people have been told they are just too busy. If you look this place is not even a member of bbu. As well as the fact that thier health inspecton was done first thing when they opened...hmmmm.
I happen to know for a fact how nasty the pleaces kitchen at the tusculum location is. The refrigeraters are broken down, leak everywhere, and do not stay cool. If you are a tea drinker watch out because they never clean the urns, just rinse them. The blenders used for smoothies and frappes are simply rinsed between drinks and if remebered they are cleaned at the end of the night. I saw with my own eyes Tom getting a piece of fruit out of the trash can because he believed more fruit could be cut off of it. The storage of food is HORRIBLE.
As I've said I no longer eat there, I just felt this is something that needed to be shared.

Sounds more like you got youself canned than an unhappy customer. Restaurants are inspected AT LEAST every six months and as my wife has been in the restaurant business for over 25 years, I know what I'm talking about. Mumpower and his team are very digilant in their jobs and take any info. or phone calls very serious and do not tell folks they are "too busy". Tom Weaver may well be a jerk, I can't address that but as far as the health and cleanliness is concerned, I do know something about that. Look at the date on the rating certificate. Being a member of the BBB has no benefits other than putting money in the BBB bank account. Been there, done that as well.
If you have real concerns, you must be a responsible caller....meaning you must give your name, otherwise you might just as well come here.

I never worked there, but I do know a lot of people who have.

As the above post reads I never worked there. I was a customer who befriended a lot of the employees and ex employees of the company.
I've been in the resturant buisness all my life, so I to know what I am talking about.
Mitch is not the one who goes to the Tusculum location. I am almost positive the man who does the inspection transfered here from Johnson City.
Yes, they do get inspected every six months. How is that effective though if the inspection is done right when they open the door, rather than turing a lunch ruch.
Go read the inspection paper posted on the wall there.

Is it appropriate? What good does it do to make disparaging remarks like this about a local business? Goodness knows G'ville needs more not less business. I happen to like Chocolate Cafe, and I will continue doing business with them.
I can not imagine having so little class as to make personal remarks such as this.

So, yes, we need businesses in Greeneville. I don't think we need or want people such as Tom in Greeneville though. Would you want to work for him? Would you want your family working for him? I am anxious to go see the health score! My point is....if you want to come here to open a business, than treat people who work for you with respect.

I ate there twice last week, and it was clean and service was good. I watched them clean up every little corner and container at closing on one visit. Every restaurant in G-Vegas should be that clean. Tom runs a good place, and I've never seen him treat employees badly. The troublemakers posting on here are big piles of crap. We need more good places like Chocolate Cafe.

I went to the one downtown a couple of times recently. The food is quite good but VERY pricey for the portion size, especially the side dishes and desserts! Also, the staff were not at all friendly ! I would go back for the food but the air of the servers being a little better than me coupled with the price does not make me want to go running back there....probably won't.

I had to wait a long time for the check once. The other time I had to chase the server down after waiting! I was polite even though they only had 2-3 tables other than mine!

I expect to be bashed over reporting my experiences.....some people can't deal with others whose opinion differs. Other credible customers voiced these very complaints, so I doubt it us just me.

I agree with the above about the wait and lack of friendliness. I've had the same experiences. I understand that when a place is busy, it sometimes takes a while to get your check. The two times I'm thinking of were far beyond that.

I can't stand to see a good establishment bashed by disgruntled former employees. I eat at the Choc Cafe about 2 or 3 times a month. The food is always good. The order is almost always correct, with a couple of minor mistakes(this can happen anywhere), the place is always clean and the employees have always been friendly to me. I have never been to the downtown location, but since the manager of that location works a couple of nights at Tusculum, I feel sure that she does a good job there also. Yes, it does cost more than McDonalds, but so does Arby's.

Yes, but in Arby's defense, they offer coupons.

I am fairly confident that most, if not all, resturaunts are subject to regular health inspections. I feel safe knowing that I'm not eating cat or dog when I dine at Chinese resturants because I am pretty sure that would be hard to hide from a health inspector. Unless, wait...unless they butcher them at home and then bring the already cut up meat from there packaged to look like chicken.

Oh no! I've been eating cat this whole time, or dog, or both. This is a terrible revelation. I need general tso in my life, but I'm facing such a moral dilemma. Should I contiue to eat chinese food and feel guilty everytime I look at my dog? I don't own any cats. Filthy animals cats are, lick themselves clean <shudder> I don't know what to do...

Maybe I should pop in to this Chocolate Cafe, though I don't have good credit. Surely I can get a reasonably priced meal there. A coffee is what, two bucks? Lunch for one couldn't be more than five or six, right? I mean, this doesn't sound like the kind of place just for yuppies with more money than cents.

I have seen him verbally bash his little mexican lady that works there, she says hola to me when I come in. I don't say anything because I'm sure
she needs the job. Why else would she tolerate it? Just sayin.....

Sounds like a friend writing this not a customer! Both places suck!

Found it very high priced and over-rated. Service was terrible down town and the 1 time I was at the Tusculum location, the tables were filthy. When paying at the down town branch 2 of the employees were really-really bad mouthing the owner where the customers could hear, very disrespectful. There is a time and place for that and standing at the cash register bashing anyone like they were is very unprofessional.

Some of you are insane. It seems very clean to me, and I've never been dissatisfied with the food or service. I own a house down the street so I'm there at least once a week. Pricey? Give me a break, it's like 7 dollars for a sandwich. Where I'm from, a club sandwich is like 12 dollars. The coffee drinks are better than anything in town, and it's almost the only place you can eat something that's not fast food.

I drive all the way to Johnson City on a daily basis just so I don't have to eat the garbage in Greeneville. My girlfriend works with a few people who have never even heard of Chocolate Cafe...and they have lived here for 25 years. Their idea of good food IS arby's or Burger King. Do any of you appreciate food for any reason other than to stay morbidly obese around here?

Who cares if the owner is a jerk, he OWNS the business. He can run it however he wants, and his employees are free to come and go if they're unhappy. He's probably stressed out from running a GOOD restaurant. I've never been to a good place where the owner is just standing in the back corner without a care. If you want that kind of management and lack of enforcement, you can go get some cold greasy fries from McDonalds.

Keep bashing local businesses like this and your little town will never have anything better than Applebees and Walmart.

No, I have no affiliation with CC.. I just moved here(wasn't a choice) from Asheville, NC and Palm Beach, FL (oh no!) Lived in San Francisco, Austin, Columbus, etc etc.. so what do I know, I've only eaten at places most of you will only see in magazines...

Keep whining, I'll be at CC.

Ok, when you all are in there eating & you see a guy mowing the yard, or employees cleaning baseboards and walls.......ask them what they are getting paid to do that work.....guarantee you it is $2.15 (waitres pay) because that is what Tom does. He has the lowest paid employees do the most time consuming work so he can get by cheaper! Before you all bash me, I am not saying the employees should be allowed to just "stand around" & get paid when there are no customers. I am saying that Tom should pay the employees minimum wage to do these jobs, but he refuses to do so. I agree that to the public, Tom is a very nice man....to the employees he is a big jerk!

Reading comprehension much? At what point in my review did I label him a jerk? I was clearly defending him.
