I've heard you Yankees move here and first thing start making fun of the way people here talk and act. Of course you're not going to be liked.
But if all else fails, get you a bottle of pills and then you'll fit right in.

I thought I would ask a question, I have lived here for several years and have not made one friend. I have tried really I have. Have any other transplants have gone thru this? I have tried thru churches, my kids friends, my neighbors. I have lived everywhere and had no problems there but this place seems so closed off to transplants. Maybe it is me

Most of my life I have lived in this area. Most of you transplants have moved in and then bitched about how your neighbor's house or yard looked just cause he had an old rusty truck parked in it. Then you say where I was from, there were laws that made your neighbors keep up their places to some kind of enforced standards, etc. Then you got the politicians to pass laws, padding their pockets.

You paid big money for nearly worthless land, driving up the price of land so the county could tax it more, and complained because the schools didn't live up to your standards, so you got taxes increased again. You put down our way of living, our heritage, and call us dumb hillbillys. You want us to be your friends, yet you stab us in the back every chance you get. Instead of minding your own business and keeping to yourself, you poke your nose into ours. And now that you have brought in the higher taxes, more restrictive laws, you decide to leave and go somewhere else so you don't have to live in the mess that you helped create. And now you wonder why you are not welcomed with open arms?

As soon as you move to Tennessee join a church and bad mouth anyone who doesn't join. Ignore all your neighbors who don't go to church unless your church is trying to recruit new members or need a job done then you have to be friendly to the heathens.

One or more toothless neighbors with open sores will come over to borrow things or ask questions like, "How old is yer youngest gurl? She shor is purty when she mows ya'll's yard.", "Isyer house alarmed? I can't afford to sesscribe but canya getme oneathem signs like thatin nar?"

Many will walk or ride freely onto any unfenced, ungated property, around your home or barn saying they have lost a "hunting dog", "the kids cat", the "youngun that ain't right". That may be true but DO NOT let them linger in case they are looking for more of your stuff to borrow after dark. Do not under any circumstances feed these people out of your gardens or invite them into your homes. They will attach themsleves daily to your back doors and greet you when your return from work.

Do not tell locals any new fangled ways to recycle plastics, or compost table scraps or they will shun you as a tree hugger. NEVER EVER tell your neighbors to stop shooting when they target practice or you will be burnt out as a liberal anti gun nut. Simply tell them to shoot in a better direction where the wind doesn't blow or the sun won't be in their eyes. Then buy a flack jacket, blaze orange vest and helmet to use when picking beans and gathering your tomatoes.

Cook outs and parties are fine as long as your friends don't make too much noise or mess. Expect the neighbors kids to ride by your house in four wheelers all through summer vacation 24-7, night and day and expect the fire works from next door from July 1st-Aug 1st and Dec 25-Jan 4th to drive you and your house pets totally insane.

What, no homophobic remark to complete the trite, absurd statement? The Civil War is over; the Union (supported by the majority of Tennessee) won. Need to get over it and get on with our lives.

Tennessee seceded from the Union and joined the Confederacy, as most of its population supported the South. Middle and West Tennessee was very much on the side of the Confederacy. East Tennessee was quite divided due to the lack of cotton and therefore, little slave trade. Your statement about Tennessee's loyalty is incorrect, especially due to the population concentration in the state not being in East Tennessee.

The secession vote on June 8, 1861 in Tennessee was 105,000 for secession and 47,000 to stay in the United States.

East Tennessee voted against secession 33,000 to 14,000.
