I guess you must be a former school teacher from Florida but moved to Greeneville to get happy but it failed. So if Greeneville is so bad them move back where you came from since you are so educated and don't fit in here...... I guess Greeneville people are beneath you, so sorry.
Don't know where you get your information, as I have neither tipped my hand sbout my past, employment status, nor degraded the people of Greeneville. I am sorry being a skilled, educated worker that moved here a decade ago is offensive to you. For your information I am under-employed, as are many others. It is not fun and there are not to many job choices for people who don't have generations of family here. In fact, there are skilled, college educated young people from your beloved Greeneville who move away because their hometown has nothing to offer. A Food City and low paying businesses like it are not going to hold them here. I think the partnership could do better and question the validity of the rumors that swirl about them not encouraging better paying businesses because of some agreement with established Greeneille-based manufacturers. More businesses like Food City are not going to improve the quality of life for Greeneville. It is an idyllic small town, but it is slipping away due to the economy and growing crime. I am not going anywhere, just hoping to see things get better here.

The local economy is a vicious cycle. Young people who move away for college rarely come back due to the lack of opportunities for their training. Many industries will not locate here due to the work force not having skills/education which they seek & various infrastructure offerings to attract industry. Better restaurant chains won't locate here due to not having population requirements or existence of certain other businesses.

I have lived here about 20 years & often feel I am underemployed. Over the years, I have known several young professionals who left the area because their educated spouses could not find jobs. Their underemployed status left them feeling "empty" which coincided with their bank accounts as they had student loans but they were underpaid for their qualifications.

Hopelessness feeds the drug culture which causes more crime & fewer educated or qualified people for job prospects.

While it would be nice to have a higher paying job you have to keep in mind that a business coming in paying a substantial amount more than the established businesses could put some out of business. The established ones will either lose good workers or have to increase their pay. Either one is going to make it tough for a business to stay open. Very few businesses are making enough of a profit these days to afford large pay raises for all employees. It's hard to believe but true.

Apparently schools are making profits. They are still giving raises and big bonuses.

Your line of thinking is exactly why I brought up the rumor that the Partnership was discouraging some higher paying businesses from settling here. The rumor has been denied, but you must admit it does make sense on some level. I am still not sure what I think about the Partnership's role in controlling local business

read the history of the food city deal (april 2012) at the link below--greeneville approved a pig in a poke (no knowledge of the specific retailer or grocer)at the behest of the partnership, tif financing benefits Bristol developer Johnson, second retailer and proposed restaurant still missing in action, yet to be heard from...perhaps the developer is searching for tenants...and now the county is considering to build a $40 million "justice center"...just like jonesborough...that should be a fun thing, a real money waster...the land deals are probably cooking (maybe even cooked) for that scam...

April 2012 real estate developer talk, reported by da Sun:
"Johnson said he plans to use a portion of the building's parking lot as the site of a new restaurant that will take Greeneville's restaurant scene to the next level."

Hasn't happened. Yo Developer guy Steve J., wha happen? Yo Industrial Development Board Wha happen?

"The home furnishings/apparel retailer plans to open in early spring 2013 [Johnson added]."

Hasn't happened. Yo Greene Co. Commissioners, all yall up for reelection, wha happen? TIF financing and all. Developer liked that a lot.

Big asphalt parking lot still waiting for that next level restaurant.
Big asphalt parking lot still waiting for that home furnishings/apparel retailer.

I've been sitting in the parking lot for three months now waiting on the doors to open. Should I just go home?

You should get a tax subsidy for waiting so long. Run along home now for a next level lunch break. Big asphalt parking lot will be here when you get back.

Sometime greed backfires, l think people was disappointed that they put another Food City there instead of what they promise a restaurant and retail store, which would have made more sense. That reason we shop out of town when we want something different. and some good food. shopper you will have to sit there until your old and gray headed and you still wont see a change.

I took your advice and went home AFTER visiting the new food city. It creeped me out, everyone that worked there looked like they came straight off channel two. Channel two people scare me.

Personally I'm fond of the new Food City, especially the men's bathroom. That cripple stool is so cozy and plenty of room to stretch your legs in there. Now if only they would heat them toilet seats, I may never leave!
If the seat is horseshoe shaped, instead of circled, just take your socks off and slide them on seat. No more cold ass and you don't have to worry about sitting in piss!

I... I can't.... How did you... Why didn't i.... This might be the greatest idea ever. I always have an extra pair of socks rolled up in my pants so I am all set. Plus after I'm done and I roll them back up the smell will give my huge bulge more authenticity. Today will be a day I will never forget.
