Wet Wille, I doubt we are cousins but like you said, you never know in Greeneville?..... Have a nice day!
Have you had the distinct pleasure of viewing any of Turd's specimens that he has left in numerous public facilities?

<quoted text>Turd, I have always enjoyed your "offerings," especially in the sink at the Burger Chef years ago. As far as I know, Silly Willie is not related to me, but in Greene County, who knows? He isn't me though. We just share the same last name. If we are related, hello cuz.
It's ok. I think silly Willie is laking enough fiber in his diet. That's why he's so cranky. And thanks Wet Willie for your kind words. You never know where I'll be leaving my "calling card" next ;)

I am sure the Ingles next door was less than thrilled, as well. I wonder how our town's leaders decided that putting two grocery stores in the same plaza was a good idea? I have not even gone to the new store because I was so pissed that we were just getting more of the same. The way the store was teased at first, I thought we were really getting something new...like a retailer we don't already have.
I personally can't wait until Publix comes to town. Now, that is a real grocery store.
I am sure that will take another 100 years of so.
Publix is the BEST grocery store EVER!

You people are such idiots. You act as if Greeneville opened the new Food City. Not the case. It is wide open for Food City to purchase a building and open as they please. You post screams of your ignorance.

Filling that lot was a specific goal of the Partnership, I even spoke to Ferguson regarding the issue. So, in essence, Greeneville did open the Food City, by making the property attractive to potential tennants, redundant tennants at that.
PSC Metals is another company that got caught up in the Partnership web...lured by breaks on taxes and road improvements and now they are closed down. Our Partnership helped them to lose the $1.7 million they spent on the facility that temporarily brought five jobs to the area for a whole year. Sounds like the our town's leaders really know how to boost the economy.

It would have never happended unless the city was willing to approve tax-increment financing.

I have been told by numerous people that Ferguson is recognized as an absolute joke around the region and state and is totally disrespected by his peers. He uses Niswonger as his calling card to apply pressure on certain individuals to neet his agenda. There seems to be a bond there and no one in Greene County really knows why.

You are right and I guess we should be thankful, but it would be nice to see jobs added that paid more than minumum wage or a little above. There are very few higher paying jobs in a grocery store setting. So many people I know are busy working two and three jobs to make ends meet, I am sure they would prefer to work just one job and have more time with their families.

I heard that a company came here in 1988 and wanted to pay really good, but the Partnership wouldnt let them. They were afraid other local industry's employees would throw a fit and would want more money for similar work. So, said company gave their employees a base pay and offered a pay-period bonus based on production and quality. What a shame the Greeneville Mafia has that much power !!

I am not one to spread lies, but was told by several locals that the partnership has for years put a cap on wages of new, incoming businesses so as to not rock the boat with long time established businesses in Greeneville. I know that is not relevant to grocery stores, who offer mostly low wage jobs anyway, but applies more to manufacturing wages. Has anyone else heard this "rumor"?
As evidenced by my user id, I am not originally from this area and have no idea if this rumor is at all true, but it would certainly explain why wages are so low in this area for manufacturing jobs, while the same job fetches much more in neighboring towns/states.

In the kitchen of the old Burger Chef, Walmart, Big Lots, all the McDonald's, the hood of my car at the Commons Shopping Center( his specimen was corn laden), in a plate at Stan's Barbecue, in a pot of chili at Wendy's, and some others. Stay away from the hood of my car!
Then go a way

If you are a former Partnership employee you should have keen insight on the issue, but the rumor is not rididculous. The partnerships wields great power in paving the way for the "right" businesses in terms of tax breaks, inspections, zoning changes, deals with utility companies, road improvements, etc. They certainly have the power to discourage growth that is not wanted whether the issue is wage, reputation or something else.
Furthermore, educated transplants like myself and higher skilled workers move here and then we move away because this county does not have businesses that can use our skills...and those that do, hire their family members whether they are qualified or not.
Finally, and more the point of this thread, the Partnership's decision to encourage another Food City to come in next door to an existing Ingles is what is ridiculous. As a former poster pointed out, in the end it will likely remove one of our grocery store choices. I am all for competition and healthy growth. The addition of another Food City in the old Walmart building represents desperation of the Partnership to bring ANY business into town, not the kind of business that will help change the dwindling economy here or bring jobs that pay enough to sustain a family.
I guess you must be a former school teacher from Florida but moved to Greeneville to get happy but it failed. So if Greeneville is so bad them move back where you came from since you are so educated and don't fit in here...... I guess Greeneville people are beneath you, so sorry.

That building sat vacant for years (several of those because Wal-mart holds their spent real estate). When the property became available, certainly it is the partnership's job to help provide incentives to fill the open space. How many large box retailers do you think were pounding on the door looking to jump in? None. Food City was the first with real interest, so the town jumped, as they should have.

I am not defending the partnership, as I do feel they could do more to incentivize commercial and industrial expansion, but you must realize that Greeneville is lacking on the metrics that most retail bases their score. Hence, Food City...

We won't get a Publix for the same reason we didn't get a Kroger back in the day, they have to make a certain amount to open one and this town can't give them that level of business
