This morning's "Johnson City Press" is reporting that a Greeneville woman has started a grass roots effort on Facebook to counter protest Westboro Baptist Church's planned protest of Sgt Benjamin White's Memorial Service in Johnson City on Monday.

Sgt. White, from Erwin, was killed last week when his helicopter crashed in Southern Afganistan.

Through Natasha Tenney's efforts, several people have planned to protest the "church's" involvement.

Tenney says members of her group will gather early Monday to try to "beat Westboro to the punch".

Westboro Church is noted for protesting memorial services for soldiers, claiming that God Hates America, and that dead soldiers are "God's Wrath against America."

According to Westboro, around 7 of the church members plan to protest.

Tenney told the "Johnson City Press" that she hopes at least 700 show up to combat Westboro's 7.

It would be great if 7000 people showed up to shout down these so-called Christians.

i have researched this thoroughly and what i have found is that these people are lawyers looking for physical confrontation so that they can engage in a lawsuit. look around on the internet and see how many times thses people have been in a courtroom.

The Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church has confirmed that members will be in Johnson City on Monday to picket the memorial service of Senior Airman Benjamin D. White, an Erwin resident who was killed in Afghanistan last week.

A flier from the group, headed by the statement “God hates America and is killing our troops in his wrath” and dated June 16, states:“Military funerals have become pagan orgies of idolatrous blasphemy, where they pray to the dunghill gods of Sodom and play ‘Taps’ to a fallen fool.”

The filer goes on to say that the “message” will be “preached in respectful, lawful proximity” to White’s memorial at Grace Fellowship Church, located on South Greenwood Drive. The flier states Westboro members will be at the service at 6:15 p.m.

White, 24, along with three other airmen, died June 9 when their HH-60G Pavehawk helicopter, assigned to the 55th Rescue Squadron at Davis-Mothan Air Force Base, Ariz., crashed in southeastern Afghanistan.

The Westboro Baptist Church is headed by the Rev. Fred Phelps and is known for picketing funerals of military service personnel in their crusade against homosexuality, displaying signs with such messages as “God Hates America.”

Keisha Shoun with Johnson City’s community relations office said there are no city laws against peaceful protest and no permit would be required for the Westboro Baptist Church’s planned picket because traffic would not be affected.

The president of USA said this war should not be allowed. The president promised to have all the men back home. The president was voted in for us to follow. We should protest we voted him in. No memorial. You sound like a Bush lover.

The troops will be coming home Carl, in an orderly fashion. In the meantime, this is about a funeral, not your political agenda.

To show up at someone's child's funeral and protest and yell at his family "He got what he deserved!" is heartless and cold. IF these people need to protest the war then protest at the bases or the recruiter's office. Not someone's funeral. These people are part of some kind of cult.

I don't think they did. There was supposed to be some severe weather in that area. Perhaps they feared the wrath of God for themselves.

The protesters were indeed in Johnson city, and that was confirmed by the Johnson City PD, but if they did come anywhere near Grace Fellowship, they did not hold signs. I received a call saying that a spokesperson for Westboro confirmed they were not protesting due to the overwhelming attendance of the counter-protest. I would like to thank each and every person who participated by calling and offering encouragement and support, by donating water, coolers, and flags, and by attending. It was a great day to be an American in east Tennessee.
