Noticed it while driving home today, way over to the left. I would have never thought it was that far over.

There's a rock sidewalk that you can see a little of. Was that where the pool was or what?

The pool was at the main lodge where the pavement ends at the top where you park and look off now.

That place sounds like it would have been totally cool during its early glory days.:)

Tomatoe, toomotoe... It's Viking mountain for all of us that's had a little bit of "fun" there...
You say tomato, I say bite me! How the Hell can you get sensitive about a mounain's nick? Good thing you don't live at the base of Round Knob. Only a couple of nuts reside there.

I used to take my Baja bug up there and hang with my buddies with their 4 X's. Used to be some bad-ass places, like the bad Shad Road until all the tree-huggers got them blocked. Fond memories of going to the carwash to wash the under-carriage and driving out the other end with mud slung plumb over the back to the hood. Those Desert Dog Monster Mudders were bad to the bone. Could really do some digging. Yeah.

I know this is an old tread, but I was up on Viking mtn road yesterday. came from Greenville area across green mountain road over the mountain and then turned left on Viking Mtn road, near Hemlock Hollow Inn. Beautiful drive.
From camp creek elementary school to Viking mtn road I saw one other vehicle coming down mtn as I was going up. Was headin to the top of viking mountain when my jeep liberty overheated due to a pin hole in radiator so I stopped at the wide turn with the great view at the power lines. I cant wait to get it fixed so I can get to the top of Viking Mtn. Can anyone give me an info on the Hemlock Hollow inn or some of the other interesting things in the area. I have been told there use to be a ski resort on top of Viking mtn.I saw a sign that said Kennedy Cabin also.
Its such a beautiful area. And so remote. If it was in N.C. or Ga there would be rental cabins everywhere. So glad this area Tn is different.

Ski resort went bankrupt back in the 60's. It was sold to some senator from GA, then he went bankrupt. Buildings were torn down in late 80's/early 90's and land sold back to forest service. Nothing there now but a field. If forest service catches you driving in the field, you get a fine. Only private land left is the first tower and on the road just past it behind the cable, also up near the top around the radio towers. Rest belongs to forest service. If you go up and the ham radio guys have the fire tower open they will let you in to look. They don't go up there as much as they used to. Otherwise you can only go up the steps to the locked door to the catwalk.

(Just wondering if anybody knows of someone who might have some old pics of the ski lodge that used to be up on Viking Mountain. I grew up in Greystone and have been on top of Viking Mountain more times than I can count. My parents used to take my brother and I sledding up there in the winter when we were kids.....back when we actually had good SNOWFALL in the winter. I can vividly remember what the former ski lodge and cabins looked like but have always wanted to see photos of it now that I am an adult. My dad told me that when the ski lodge was torn down and done away with, the round cabins were lifted off the mountain by helicopter. Three of them are livable homes and currently sit in a neighborhood where I live now. I asked my dad if he was sure that these round cabins down the road from me are the same ones that were up on Viking and he swears that they are.
I personally love going up to Viking Mountain, especially in the fall season. It brings back many memories of my childhood and spending those moments with my parents. We would always climb up into the one small fire tower for a better view. Last time I saw that tower up close it was falling apart. I'm pretty sure that when you are in the top of that tower you can actually see over into North Carolina. My boyfriend, my girls and I recently went up to Viking and I took some good photos as it was a perfectly clear, sunny day. I hope to make it up there this winter during a good snowfall......that is if the road is open).

the founder of the resort his name was mike and he was from florida the reason it didnt make it was they could never get the ski sclope the way they wanted because the gov owned the land that would have made the best sclope

Thanks for posting this, it was very interesting. I'd love to see photos of the area from the late 60's-early 70's period, when it was open. I'd also like to read the story of this, and know who was the developer. The sign(and small a-frame) was at the intersection of the road with Asheville Hwy until a few years ago.
I know that the road(or lack thereof) is blamed for the failures, but I'd suspect that a lack of snow killed the whole idea of a ski resort.

Why would anyone want to tear up the balds anyone? Still makes no sense to me, the rednecks who only care about themselves and don't want others to enjoy it. Has nothing to do with tree hugging.
