What city is it that you see when you're on the top of Viking mountain? I always assumed it was Greeneville, but am pretty sure it's a town in North Carolina. Just wondering if anyone has researched this and knows the correct answer.

If you are up on the fire tower and its a clear night, you can see Tusculum, Baileyton, Mosheim, as well as some towns in NC.

Depending on where you are at up there it has some different official US Forest Service names. Camp Creek Bald is where the fire tower is. Little Bald is the peak of the ridge that the power lines cross over.

Just wondering if anybody knows of someone who might have some old pics of the ski lodge that used to be up on Viking Mountain. I grew up in Greystone and have been on top of Viking Mountain more times than I can count. My parents used to take my brother and I sledding up there in the winter when we were kids.....back when we actually had good SNOWFALL in the winter. I can vividly remember what the former ski lodge and cabins looked like but have always wanted to see photos of it now that I am an adult. My dad told me that when the ski lodge was torn down and done away with, the round cabins were lifted off the mountain by helicopter. Three of them are livable homes and currently sit in a neighborhood where I live now. I asked my dad if he was sure that these round cabins down the road from me are the same ones that were up on Viking and he swears that they are.

I personally love going up to Viking Mountain, especially in the fall season. It brings back many memories of my childhood and spending those moments with my parents. We would always climb up into the one small fire tower for a better view. Last time I saw that tower up close it was falling apart. I'm pretty sure that when you are in the top of that tower you can actually see over into North Carolina. My boyfriend, my girls and I recently went up to Viking and I took some good photos as it was a perfectly clear, sunny day. I hope to make it up there this winter during a good snowfall......that is if the road is open.

Yes the road is still gravel all the way up and the gravel part still starts at a point at the bottom of the mountain where there is a row of cabins on the left (in a deep curve). It's a rough & bumpy ride up there but totally worth it

camp creek bald (viking) as the yankees that developed it in the late 60"S called it,is an awesome place,we used to board up one of the old cabins and build a fire in the old rock fireplace and party all weekend long and watch it snow snow snow, good memories. Now all the roads are blocked off and if Mr.Green jeans catches you off road itll cost ya.The town you see to the west of course is G"ville, and the one to the south is Duckmill,NC.Yes some of the old cabins are in a neighborhood off the 107 and a house in tusculum has the old spiral staircase in it out of the main lodge.
