Okay - for those of you who care and understand why I do this, here are Austin Powder Company Facts thus far:
2005 pled guilty to 3 felony counts, falsification of documents to ATF. 3 sites had licenses revoked permanently, PA, VA and NC. The investigation began with an undercover purchase of high explovsives in DC. The truck was then traded for cocaine... Company spins this as though they just didn't want to pay legal fees... And that they are much better "actors" since 9/11. Yet, the investigation grew to 19 states, including TN. In 1996 the company was charged with price fixing in several states. In 2002 they pled guilty to 2 misdemeanors of failing to notify ATF of missing explosives in Nevada and improperly storing explosives in KY. In 2007 EPA Region 5 cited them for "failure to file a timely inventory update report," for hazardous chemicals. In 2009 there was a huge explosion at the McArthur, OH plant. 8 injured. 3 seriously. Neigbors would not give their names and I always find that neighbors that won't speak of dirty industry are, quite simply, afraid. Oddly, the company did not comment either.. Most alarming thing about this OH explosion is that in late 2003, The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) cited them for 11 serious violations. In 1983, on behalf of the EPA, The Dept. of Justice brought a civil action against them and others for the contamination of groundwater AND surface water.$1.7 million in emergency Cercla funds were incurred for cleanup and over half a mill to do an investigation/feasibility study to see what, if anything, could be done about the poisoned water. The fact is the water will never be the same and the contamination threatened future ground water supplies of the area and was way, way, WAY high on VOC's (Volatile Organic Compounds).I am particularly troubled that in 2007 and 08 there are 4 filings under the Toxic Substances Control Act with penalty. These are "closed." Unavailable to the public, and their latest Region 4 RCRA report is also unavailable to the public. There are also numerous lawsuits from mining and safety. The fact is, anyway you cut it, this is a chemical company. Reports have it being set up on at least 200 acres of Cansler land. I like the Canslers, but I have to look at the big picture here. This is a company that was brought in under dark of night. It was not "legally" publicly noticed. This company has an extensive record of violatiing worker safety, the environment and THE LAW. For those of us who care about our future, our air and water, and the children, be advised, the Greeneville Parnership does not care one bit. WalMart and DTR were brought in under the same dark.....My question is, how much more can Greene County take? For anyone that is not simply a hate monger, here for sport, I will answer all inquiries privately. My email is [email protected] and I thank you for your time.

Park I don't think I'm alone in my opinion that you're an unnecessary threat to our opportunity to make a living. If I was you I wouldn't place myself in such a dangerous position. Stay out of this. You're not doing us any favors.

Wish this information had come to light sooner.
" In 1983, on behalf of the EPA, The Dept. of Justice brought a civil action against them and others for the contamination of groundwater AND surface water.$1.7 million in emergency Cercla funds were incurred for cleanup and over half a mill to do an investigation/feasibility study to see what, if anything, could be done about the poisoned water. Where is the Greeneville Sun on this issue? The Media should be digging, not writing about what they are hand-fed by local government and partnership officials. I really hope this causes some to reconsider voting for their elected officials come next election cycle. It should.
Also Realist, it's far from being here. This is going to be challenged in court (not by me or anyone I know, but it certainly will be). Also, if more than 15-25 jobs are actually created from this, it'll be a shock to me. On the jobs front, this is a short-term band-aid for a long-term issue, at the cost of the environment and the health of local people. Some people can't see the forest for the trees, evidently.

"Needed," I dunno why. I wish I did. A lot of ugly industry came in here while I was in CA. I can only track what I can track and as you probably know, NFS is my pet peeve. But, I'm on it. Will do the best I can do. Thanks for caring.

Why don't you just leave? You're just trying to stir the pot to get your washed up self in the limelight.

Thanks Park for having the time, energy, spirit to get the facts, maybe bringing to light the good ole boy network. I don't really care about the enviromental damage as this area is almost a dead zone now. I mean most of the dairy, beef farms are located on streams and tributories of the major rivers. They use the water to wash away manure and fertilizers. Park , you have a long row to hoe. The greeneville sun rag is very much complicit in the arrangement between land owners and Austin by covering up. If you live in Houston, you may get some of the construction work, and you can bet your sweet ass the good paying jobs will be transfers from closed down sites..GO PARK

I agree that the Partnership doesn't care and in my opinion Tom Ferguson should be held accountable for improper conduct and misleading the public. At some point in time there will be an explosion which will release toxic fumes in the air. Greene Countians will pay the price.
