All this expensive talk over a new jail , has a simple solution. The exercise of the eminent domain.
The government could take the old Magnavox building and pay whatever they wanted to and convert it into a new Justice Center and jail. They talked about that building before , but decided it was too much money for half of the building. Could that have been because one of the guys doing the negotiating was a personal friend of the owner ? One has to wonder about that. Under the power of eminent domain , they would own the entire building and property , for a fair price , thereby reducing the outlay of a bunch of cash. This would make the complete project cost millions less than projected. The result would be a top of the line Justice Center and jail , and would not put the burden on the taxpayers of this county.

Considering theres so many companies just begging for that space, lol, it looks to me like any half way reasonable price for it would be taken.

Yes! That's what I think every time I hear about them discussing new jail plans and budgets. Hawkins County bought the vacant K-Mart building there and transformed it into a detention center. Why can't Greene County do the same with all the vacant buildings and property available here?

sick of hearing about a new jail when our schools so badly could use the money instead! where are our priorities? I say 'hard time' in minimal humane living cinditions--bread/water and community service. inevitably they r in jail bc they have violated someone else's rights. let them dig water lines, work on road crews etc maybe this would encourage these misfits from returning! don't know about you but I HAVE TO WORK to pay for luxuries like cable TV, sir conditioning, and food!!(sarcasm intended)

Guarantee most the people bitching about new jail doesn't even work and pay taxes. It's better to go ahead and build one than have federal judges make them do it. A judge can say how big and how much.

Guarantee you probably work for the government and would be among the biggest beneficiaries of more taxes and more government. We have way too many people in government positions that get stars in their eyes when it comes to spending other people's money. I work and pay plenty taxes, and I say hell no to a new jail.

So what you are saying is that our current facility is not run right because it sure as hell doesn't make money.

Incarceration and taking away one's freedom IS the punishment, forced labor isn't. I do agree some of the amenities should be limited to the very basics though.

We should take some lessons from the Mexicans and the Russians. No amenities period, and few basics. Everyone that's there should leave after their sentence saying I never want to go back there, then maybe they'll work twice as hard to stay out and save us some tax money.

I was merely trying to establish a conversation about the fact that we will get a new jail , eventually. The power of the eminent domain has been used before. The government takes property and sells it to builders to put up shopping malls , etc. This power is to be for the betterment of the public , which , in this case , would provide the county with additional income from the state and federal government for housing prisoners. Using the power of eminent domain would greatly reduce the cost of building a new facility , thus reducing the burden being placed on the taxpayers substantially. The old Magnavox building on Industrial Blvd , would be an ideal location and by using the power of eminent domain , would reduce the cost dramatically. I don't think that idea has , as of yet , been discussed by the powers that be , i.e., the mayor and his commissioners. I'm just saying , that power is there to use , so , why has this subject not been breached ?

It's a great idea and one that's so logical and common sense, surely it's been discussed at some point in time. Maybe you could suggest your idea to your County Commissioner?

We do not need more strong arm government, or any more government for that matter. We certainly don't need the government to be allowed looser restrictions for seizing private property. That's called communism. If that's what you believe, then I am sure the government could find a valuable use for your property and I suggest we start with yours.

I'll suggest to my commissioner that the government seize your property along with 7wolves above. It should be common sense to support strong private property rights in the USA, but some of you people are dumbazzes.

I'm guessing that you didn't score well in reading comprehension skills. The word "seize" was not used in the body of my post. If you read the post , I stated that the government would pay a "fair" price for the property , meaning , not a "bloated" price. As in all businesses , the building was "depreciated" annually at tax time , meaning that the taxpayer actually paid for the building. When that property is then sold , it must be reported as income , thereby being subject to federal income tax.

That and the fact that only a couple of posters here can form a rational thought or opinion. And yes, if I had buildings and property that were deteriorating from lack of use and could be used for something constructive or beneficial, I'd take a fair price for them whether it be from public or private sources.

Hawkins County BOUGHT the old KMart building, they did not seize it. KMart had an empty building in Rogersville and agreed on a price to sell it to Hawkins County for use as a jail. I think the question is why can't Greene County do the same with all the empty buildings we have sitting unused year after year.

I've been in jail a few times mainly for family sqabbles and what not, nothing real bad. I expect to be treated like a person and not an animal. They need to update some parts of the jail here.
