If I understand what I read, they can vote it in themselves unless they get 10K signatures on a petition for a referendum. For them to vote it in, they have to get a majority vote during two consecutive meetings, June 17 and July 17. So if a petition is to be circulated, it needs to get going.
Somebody correct me if I'm wrong about my interpretation.
Passage must be 2/3 majority, twice. If passed, a petition of 1800 gives the people a vote.

This is a shame and disgrace. A bunch of over educated morons in this community. I will never understand why this town can't grow like our surrounding communities. The tricities area has everything, morristown, Knoxville, Sevierville etc. Those people know and understand how to operate a town. One thing I'd like to see cut is the Greeneville City Schools Maintenance vehicles eliminated from being driven home. Why should we have to foot the bill for this? The county and other departments aren't allowed to do so. What is it going to take to change this mess?

I think the real problem is that those running our town are UNDER-educated. Remember, we labor under the "good ol' boy" system of government. Education, or lack thereof, is not necessarily a deal breaker.

What do we do to get some petitions started? We might as well get two petitions going. One for wheel tax and the other for property tax. Our "good ol' boys" are going to try to get more money one way or the other.

The board then voted 5-2, with Austin and Johnson opposed, to pave the entire driveway and parking lot and to accept Summers Taylor's bid of $58,500.
County has no money but it can pave a driveway and parking lot at Chuckey Doak?
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE know that a lot of the teachers in the Greene County School System feel just terrible about taxes being raised last year. That tax hurt a good many of our own families. Mrs. Austin has many times in the past voted for raises for the teachers but she does realize that the economic picture is dim for so many right now. I like Dr. Kirk, don't get me wrong, but she should not raise taxes at this time to give us more bonuses, etc. My own husband took a cut in pay to keep his job and he went to college and has a degree. Teachers should not put themselves above those of others, especially when money is so tight for so many. Thank you.

Are you saying that Tim White and the Kirk-Jones led School Board didn't raise our taxes last year? Hmmmmmmmm. I could have swore it was Tim White who came back and had other ill-elected commissioners do Kirk-Jones and the School Board's bidding for them. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm. I do agree that we have a whole bunch of idiots running Greeneville and Greene County into never-never land, but give credit where credit is due for last year's tax increase.

Please explain to me how it will benefit a car dealer to keep out businesses that pay good wages. If more people work and make more money, wouldn't they be more likely to buy a new car? Your post defies logic.

Well didn't anyone see this coming? Folks hit the ceiling over the wheel tax proposal, and it was countered with the "much less hurtful" property tax increase, which,a year later was somewhat of a percentage downgraded but was a tax hike none the less. Now the wheel tax is an issue again. Get ready for whatever the "other" option will be.

my sister basically got thrown out of the hospital because they didn't have insurance. she and her husband lost there jobs last year. they are barely holding onto there home having taking everything they had out of savings. no problem just vote to raise there land taxes a couple of more times and they'll be out in the street. do you people even have a conscious?

Unlike common, ordinary citizens, the government (national, state, and local) doesn't think they have to quit spending when the money's gone. If I go over my monthly budget, by golly I have to do without something.

Yeah Myst, I agree... if I run short of my budget (like I did this month when I had a $1000 car repair bill) I don't get to raise taxes to get my money... No I sit down.. look at my budget.. see where I can cut my spending or put off buying something I don't have to have and just deal with it. That's why I say these azzclowns are unimaginitive and deaf. Actually, they KNOW the citizens don't want to have this damn wheel tax but they don't care.. that's worse and the reason they should be thrown out of office next election.

ANd, of course they make sure these meetings are at 10 a.m. when people that work can't come opposed to 7:00 p.m like NORMAL City COuncils, etc. are held That's probably deliberate too.

what im implying is the rich who run this town are keeping everyone else from coming in here and building just so they can control everything in this town and thats why we keep getting tax increases because law states certain programs have to be in place and the money has to come from somewhere, but if big business would build here and pay taxes in wouldnt be put on the backs of citizens so much like it is now
