The city should drug test everybody. That might shake some things up.

Let well enough alone , let people work.
myself....I think issues like this HINDER small towns like Greeneville from progressing. In out quaint little "Bible belt" here, EVERYTHING is considered evil and harmful to the children. Come on folks....is worship at church really going to feel any different because of the distance from the front door of a business who sells beer? Do we really think kids are going to file out of school at 3:15 and go buy a 6 pack solely because its closer to them? This isnt clear thinking. I dont support any one business or am I connected to really anyone who would benefit from sales of alchohol here....I just feel that in a town that is suffering from stagnant business, nothing should be left off the table when it comes to someone making a living here
You live in a dream world. And if you don't like living in the Bible Belt then the road out of town if the same one you came in on.

Listen, I'm not against drug testing by far, but do you not realize that people on drugs know how to pass the tests? What about the parents on drugs that send their kids to the Y? Should the Y make the parents pass a drug test before they will accept their kids?

If you are so concerned about leaving your child at the Y-- then DON"T. Listen to your gut feelings instead of wasting your time on Topix.com .

That's right. By the way, Travis, everybody here is not going to agree with your anti-bible, anti-Greeneville, pro-beer statements like they do on My Greeneville- facebook. I've seen that same old post of yours on facebook.

God is watching. Man will always be sinful. It just seems like sin and recreation go together real easy. Recreation should be for enjoyment but it is'nt. I saw a parent jumping on a kid last night because he didn't play ball the way the parent thought that he should. The same man was so happy telling about how much he had made last weekend betting on the game and the little kids at eastview games. Sick Sick Sick Why do we pay taxes for this trash and why do we put up with it
The rec doesn't allow betting on games. And Butch at the rec center married a preacher's daughter. Butch would have to be a good person to do that.

And who do you expect to pay for all this drug testing? Do all of you realize that the YMCA is not a private company who does what they do for profit? The Y is a non-profit agency that relies on the dues, fees, and donations of the communities in which they are located. And do you have any idea how much money you're talking about here...just for the Y, not to mention the school system? How about if the Y charges additional dues to only the parents/families who have children that attend AND who want to have drug testing done?? It will have to be a large enough increase to pay for the drug testing for any employee who might even say "hello" to your child, much less interact with them, along with the salary for the new employee that would be required just to handle all of the paperwork and scheduling that would result from such a task. The cost will be spread across just those families who want the testing, though, so the individual increase can't be measured until we know who wants it bad enough to pay the cost....

Robo-Apparently something this old lady said must have upset you? What was it? Was it what I said about wasting time? When I had small children I did not waste my time on forums, but now that my children are grown, successful and living on their own I have time for forums.
I didn't depend on the YMCA to babysit my kids. I certainly wouldn't have left my children there if I even SUSPECTED drug use. I know that a forum like this isn't going to solve that ladies problems with proper child care. Do you think the public takes these seriously?
ROBO- My time is not wasted here. It keeps me mentally sharp and "in the know". Pretty good for a 83 year old lady!!
It certainly would be a waste of my time if I had those precious children still at home. Time flies, and children grow up overnight it seems.

Travis, I can understand why parents are concerned about the well being of their children in this "Bible BELT" town of ours. Selling beer close to a church or school has nothing to do with our town's stagnant business( as you call it). I strongly disagree with your statement "nothing should be left off the table when it comes to someone making a living here." I can only imagine what some people would do to make a living......Do you want strip clubs in Greeenville? What about whore houses? Do you want drugs to be legal because someone needs to make a living?
I want beer sold at outside singing downtown!
I agree that people need to work, but I do not agree that "nothing should be left off the table when it comes to making a living here."
Too many other towns with the same laws as Greeneville are progressing. Those laws to protect children and respect churches are not Greeneville's problem.

Are you talking about the Gospel singing downtown during the Iris Festival? Are you talking about beer being sold during Festivals downtown when children are performing?
Why can't you be happy buying your beer in stores? Why can't you be happy buying beer in bars? You would have to pay more for it at a festival anyway.
You sound like you would enjoy the festivals over in Asheville, NC.

The real problem with the YMCA is the fact that its turning into the boys and girls club. Its full of punk ass kids that run all around, and clog the damn place up. There should be a side for adults and a side for the kids.

What people fail to realize is that drug tests do not work for cocaine and most pills,as they just stay in the body for 3 days. Marijuana stays for 30 days. So if you wanna catch a bunch of marijuana smokers, whom are not hurting anybody do that, but you likely will not catch the problem users.

Concerned Mother wrote:
I am a concerned mother letting the other parents of Greeneville know: The YMCA does NOT drug test the people who are employed there. If you send your child to the afterschool program or activities beware. After many complaints of some workers being involved with illegal drugs, they still will not drug test them. No, not everyone there... there are many great people who work there. But most of the afterschool care workers need to be tested to protect our children who go there or want to go there. Imagine if one of these people wrecked while driving your child from school to the YMCA? In a job being around children and driving them..... THEY ALL SHOULD BE TESTED TO KEEP OUR CHILDREN SAFE
Yeah concerned mother? Really? So who drug tests the parents when they are high on their prescription drugs? Or whenever their three sheets after a few drinks? Where is the concern for the children then? I would rather someone who smokes a little weed now and then to take care of my child than a drunk or a pill head.

I agree Travis. We should have beer sold at festivals and then maybe our festivals wouldn't be so lame and people would actually want to attend them. The Blue Plum in JC is an awesome festival, great music and you can have your beer right on the street. Greeneville needs some revitalization, and for the folks that don't want to buy beer.....don't buy it. No one is going to force you to drink. I think it is amazing that these religious fanatics who want religious freedom and get it, have to judge everyone else that do not believe the way they do and want to jurisdict what the rest of the town does. They should stay home and read their bible and let the rest of us have some fun.
