Is homeschooling children child abuse?

I recently had an interesting discussion with a friend. Not discussing the legality or constitutionality of home schooling children, rather the psychological effects?

Are children that are home schooled set up for failure? Home schooled kids usually turn out to be socially awkward and weird. They lack proper social skills that will make them successful professionally and socially. This may be due in part to the people who usually tend to homeschool their kids (religious fundamentalists, paranoid anti-government types, and etc.) rather than the lack of social interaction.

Not to mention many top colleges quietly discourage admission committees to offer admission to home schooled students.

Any thoughts?

I homeschooled my children for the first few years and I felt justified in doing so. I am a college-grade turned stay at home mom. I am not a religious person or anti-government type. My children attended public school later and were leaps and bounds ahead of their classmates. At that point I felt like putting them in the public system was a disservice. They were bored. They have since settled in and I think the socialization was good for them, though I still believe they could have been taught more efficiently at home.
Speaking from my experiences here in Greeneville, I do not see most of the home schooled children actually being schooled at all. The motivation of the parents seems to be protecting their children from outsiders, not providing them with an education.
Parents who are really interested in doing what is best for their children can successfully home school them and prepare them for college. On the positive side truly educated homeschool children have self-discipline, motivation and a good work ethic and generally do well in college.
I think the problem in homeschooling lies mainly in the lack of accountability for parents who often fib about teaching their children at home and the need for more frequent and thorough standardized testing of homeschool students. If these issues were addressed in the state of Tennessee home-schooling could be a good thing.

Home schooling is a lazy parent who won't get up and get their kids ready for school, kids miss so much by not being with other kids, I am qualified to teach mine at home but i want them in the real world and getting a better education

its good.for kids to be homeschooled and public school wouldnt be bad if parents didnt have to worry that their child might get shot at by a maniac or stabbed or bullied by kids or teachers but hey its the real world this is what the real world has become. i cant imagine myself though missing prom or clubs ffa fta. socialization is part of an education but sometimes teachers are so pushed kids dont get one on one teaching but i see both sides...the whole picture

That's pretty hard to do when kids are interested in sports but the school will not even consider letting them even try out unless they have played for that school before or are the child of someone in the Booster club or some well known person in towns child. Don't say this is crazy because I know kids who have been told to "just go to town and play in the rec. league" and they haven't even given them a chance to try out. Some of these kids could possibly have played circles around some of the ones who "had played before." It's all who ya know.

I find it rather hilarious that until the late 1800's and beyond being in a very small setting with different grades of students was how almost everyone in the world was educated. It's the schools with hundreds or thousands of students in one building, segregated with only one age of kids that is the new experiment in education.

Ha how funny, worthington, to ask if homeschooling was abuse! My school age grand children are homeschooled. When one of them was seven years old she saw a picture in a Life book about the Holacost she said to me "Thats the Jewish people who were persecuted by the Germans before world war 2 stated in 1939. Home school is wonderful and safe.

I homeschool my children. They have friends. They have sleepovers. They are way more educated than your Greene County Public schooled children. My kids are respectful, helpful, are learning what the real world is about. You definitely can't get that in any school here.

How can someone who thinks as you do have an "interesting discussion with a friend" when it is so obvious to everyone how one-sided you are in your assumptions. When a person is as one-sided as you are, that's not a "discussion", that's an "agenda".

Going so far as to slam those parents who care so much about their children that they invest all their time educating them. Those are the people we ought to be praising, not dissing like you are so willing to do.

Meanwhile look at the public education system: parents drop their kids off at public school because it is cheaper than a baby sitter. Meanwhile the unions are fighting for teachers who do nothing but sit around all day in the classrooms doing nothing.

Public schools might have been a good idea in the past, because a well-educated, civic-minded America is what is necessary for national security and a vibrant economy. That said, look around today. When was the last time you saw a well-educated or civic-minded American graduate from high school?

Don't make me laugh.

Public schools are run by the apathetic and are graduating students who cannot read. America's public schools are the worst in the world, and the universities are even worse than that because all the universities in this country are centers for indoctrination into the Liberal mindset. Our entire education system is based on the Hitler Junge.

Homeschooling is the best option a parent has if they care about their child's future. You pick what you want to teach your children, if you want to teach them the Bible then you do not need Government's permission to do so. You will teach your kid what they need to know, and that means plenty of Bible, something they won't get in public school.

What really needs to happen in this country is for public schooling to end entirely. Privatize the public schools, go over to charter schools and school vouchers. Let parents decide which school to enroll their kids in, and what the curriculum will consist of. Right now the people making the decisions are Government politicians and snobbish know-it-alls with "Masters degrees in Education". These people don't know what they are doing, they don't know what your individual child's needs are like you know them.

We need to be rouding up all these educational "specialists" and giving them the pink slip. Because this is where all our tax dollars are going, down the drain.

Public schools have been converted into little more than Liberal Satanic Indoctrination Centers, my friends.

Your children are taught that it is Okay to Be Gay (it is not, they will burn with their gay friends one day if they believe that!)

Your children are taught that all that is good in life comes from the government setting them up to one day praise the Antichrist (he is not Obama but Obama is paving the way for him!)

Your children are taught to have free sex anytime they want with anyone they want even the same sex is A-OK in our forward thinking progressive country, just use a condom and if you get pregnant just abort the child it is just a bunch of cells.(yes these promiscuous baby murderers will burn in hell forever while their murdered child is in heaven wondering why mommy murdered them!)

The World is changing and people are becoming who and what they want. Kids aren't taught to be anything, just given alternative views of the World to make their own choices. It's better sometimes than indoctrination into what society thinks they should be according to long accepted "standards" that are slowly evaporating. Some people are afraid of change....
