I have a stepchild whose biological dad has not been that great of a dad as far as morals are concerned. The child is approaching teen years and his mother and I teach him right from wrong. The problem is that he gets defensive about some issues we discuss if his dad has failed in these areas. We do not talk negative about his bio dad but we feel that it is important to teach him morals. He looks to me and his grandfather for guidance but still gets defensive. We are afraid that he will follow in the steps of his bio dad and his dads dad and so on of having a bad reputation. I get so embarrassed because he sometimes will proudly mention his dads dad in public and people make fun and he dont even know it.

Well, he is going into the teen years and you're not is dad. I don't mean that in a bad way. I have 2 step parents and I love them, but they're not my birth parents. I always went to my mom for anything but I am female. Maybe he just wants his dads acceptance?
