That's the mentality of all the ones that went out to those homes they forget where they come from and think they are better than Gvdc staff. They barely will talk to you or associate with Gvdc staff. It's like when they went through ETH training they brainwashed them to forget who helped them along the way or were their coworkers. There's maybe two that dont act like that but that's about it.

Since there appear to be folks here "in the know", I was having lunch with two gentlemen from this area today and the subject of GVDC came up. They are both business owners, who I'm sure pay a lot of taxes, and they were complaining about GVDC wasting a lot money. They also said the group homes cost close to a million dollars each yet only housed five or six patients. Is this true? I'm new here and understand there's always two sides to every story.

a lot of money has been wasted @ gvdc but not as much for the past year. The homes cost tn tax payers over a million each and house 4 residents @ full capacity. It wasn't about how much it cost, it was about settling a lawsuit with the feds.

The group homes were federaly mandated by the department of justice as a result of a federal lawsuit filed on the behalf of several state institution residents and there families. They did cost almost a million dollars to build, but the choice of the design and the contracts came directly from Nashville. The cost per day for each resident is almost 700 dollars which seems high but compaired with GVDC's 1500 is a bargin.(GVDC has several doctors on staff who make close to 24,000.00 dollars a month and various other very highly paid staff)They both are money hogs but something that will not go away. The men and women who live in both ETCH and GVDC are either the most medicaly fragile or have challenging behaviors. It is our responsibility to care for them.

It's a little over $800 now a day at Gvdc. New windows and doors at Gvdc. Heating and cooling at the gym. New garage for maintenance. New boiler for admin building. The resource center is about to crash! ETH offices moving into a closed down building on Gvdc campus. Most of the people in the admin building has moved to Hawthorne. I like the superintendent She's blunt and has nothing to hide!

It seems quite costly, especially the daily expense per patient, but I suppose they have many medical problems in conjunction with mental disabilities that need treatment as well and we all know medical treatment in any type facility doesn't come cheap. And the houses...when someone mentioned the federal government getting involved, I'm not surprised. Still, it's taxpayer funded so you know there will be concerns about it. Are the families of the patients responsible for any of the expense of their care other than paying their share of taxes?

No, the families are not required to pay any additional monies.

Remember, these "private" agencies are also FULLY FUNDED by state and federal Tax money. They are supposedly non- profit organizations. Well, the agencies doesn't make a profit but the "owners" make a KILLING!

You think that this death is making news. Wait till the same thing happens at one of the private community agencies. All that needs to happen is to truly let an UN-biased investigation occur. You tax payers have no idea what is happen to your money within the DIDD system.

Clients do pass away at the local agencies. You seem to think a suspicious death will occur at one of them. Maybe - maybe not. I can tell you from experience that the local agencies reign in their employees a lot more than the state employees. If they fail a drug test, they are out the door, fired. No so at GVDC. State employees have greater job security when they screw up.
