Anyone notice the long vacation taken by employees at the Greeneville Post Office? Being closed Thurs., made sense, but Friday and Saturday?
I drove into town Friday to drop off a pre-paid box and they were closed. No sign to indicate they would be closed Sat. too...so silly me ...I drove in again on Sat. As 20+ people waited to get in (9:59 a.m.) a sign was posted from inside the office area saying they would be closed on Sat., too. After I drove to Chuckey (a postage stamp of an office which managed to keep it's doors open) to put my EBAY stuff in the mail, I e-mailed a complaint.
If you are one of those who were inconvenienced and out gas money from a wasted trip to the post office I urge you to do the same.
I can't wait till the USPS goes under so free enterprise can fix this mess.

Oh yeah... free enterprise. Let's see... how about $2.50 to mail a simple letter or for your eBay purchases, those little boxes that now cost $5.15 (Priority Rate) would be $12.50 ... if ya don't like the Post Office use Fed Ex or UPS. BTW - there was a sign on the door since TUESDAY that said the Post Office would close be closed Thursday (Thankjsgiving), at NOON on Friday and ALL DAY on Saturday. If 20 people can't read a sign, maybe the Greene County School System can ask for more $$$$ to teach'em reading...

I saw the sign earlier this week, but I also thought it WEIRD that they were closed for all these days....

They're serious about their holidays. I watched the story on channel 11 about the ETSU basketball players arrested for selling marihuana which they were receiving in the mail. Police said one package was still at the JC post office. However they were forced to wait until Monday to confiscate it because the Post Master General refused to come in because of the holiday! I feel that's a little much.

Given the financial standing of the USPS it is not too far fetched to believe that these were mandatory shutdowns for certain locations. I would also not be surprised if they were unpaid time off. I have heard they are making massive cuts in order to stay alive. The office may have been closed but deliveries still took place.

Why don't all you dip sticks just get all your bills via e-mail? Pay your bills online! To hell with snail mail. I don't trust the USPS to deliver a dang thing to me. UPS or FedEX all the way. Everything else is e-mailed. F^ck the post office ;-) And to the idiot b!tching about wasting gas money. You do realize the postal carrier will pick up your stupid package right?????!diot!!!

The police were just upset because they couldn't light up and smoke. What goes better with Thanksgiving than the munchies??:)

FYI, I am a high school student, and therefore, cannot be at home for the postal carrier to pick up my package. My parents have a lock on our gate which makes it impossible to do business from home. I MUST drive into town to keep my EBAY business going AND the post office must be open because the large pre-paid doesn't fit in their drop box. It would just be nice if the Post Office was open when it should be so I did not waste my money on gas. It seems like a reasonable expectation.

I'm with you on this one.. they have their dang "rules" about when you are supposed to mail packages overseas and then, on possibly one of the biggest weekends to mail stuff, they are home stuffing themselves. lol I have never ever known a post office to be closed this many days in a row.... I actually thought there was some rule about it but i may be wrong.. I'll have to ask my friend who is a postmistress.(She worked, BTW)

There are a lot of reasons why the USPS is losing money and being customer friendly is one of them. There is no reason why the windows could not have been open all day Friday and Saturday morning as usual.

People always fuss about how the USPS is a sinking ship financially. Well, there is a reason for this, and if you want to really know why USPS has a hard time making it, do a little digging.

Due to a 2006 congressional mandate they are having to pre-fund 75 years of pensions in a 10-year period.

If you doubt this, read about the “Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act of 2006”

Do you know of any other agency or corporation that is required to do this? This provision costs the Postal Service $5.5 billion a year.

Try shipping with solely with FED-EX or UPS for about 6 months, and then see how you like the USPS. THe rates are exceptional, particularly for PRIORITY MAIL.

Tell us about your eBay business. What do you sell and how well are you doing? In the past I was a Power Seller, my items were mainly vintage knives or anything cutlery related. That was years ago when it was more fun to trade on eBay. Eventually I had trouble maintaining inventory at a price that made it worth my time. I still buy a lot of knives off eBay.

No need to quote me junior lol.. I didn't make the remark to begin with. But, since you want my attention, here you go. The USPS doesn't require you to be there when they pick up packages. Is it really their fault you live with your mother and father behind a locked gate? Is it their fault you didn't think to find out if they were open before going (via telephone)? Nope. Also, when selling or buying on E-Bay there is a certain grace period between receiving payment and shipping. I am sure that if you informed the buyer of the holiday delaying their package (if they didn't know already) it would have been fine.

I sell mostly military items and small antiques, but also part out motorcyles, etc. I got started about six months ago, and am hoping I can make enough for gas money etc., so I don't have to work at McDs or a grocery store. I have done okay, but things are a little inconsistent so far.

Say what you want. My complaint is valid. The Post Office has always been open on the Fri. and Sat. after Thanksgiving. I was there on Friday and there was no sign indicating they would be closed Sat. And, if the druggies in this town didn't steal everything that wasn't nailed down I might be able to arrange for pick up and maybe we could leave our gate unlocked. We have had outgoing packages stolen from our mailbox on more than one occasion.
