I'm retired and can't afford to continue my Comcast cable service. I'm curious how many free TV channels I might get with the use of a new roof mounted antenna? I live on the east side of town near Walmart.

From what I can remember you could get 5, 6, 11, 19, and 39 with an antenna.

If you have internet access at your home you could always watch a ton of different channels utilizing various websites.

For instance if you are a sports fan you can watch many ESPN shows through espn.com .

If you had the proper type of television set you could even tie your computer into your TV and watch these channels on your TV screen.

I was thinking five channels but with the HD converter box it may be more.I have 500 channels and can rarely find a show worth watching.I renewed my library card. You can't go wrong with classic literature!

Order a cheap, amplified antenna off Ebay. One with a built in rotor works well. Dump the Magnavox converter box. It is junk! Look for a Zenith or Insignia converter box on Ebay. Insignia a is Best Buy rebranded Zenith. Zenith gets highest ratings. The Magnavox does not update fast enough to turn the rotator and lock into signals.

I can come over and set it up so you get cable free. I get mine free using a splitter going from the neighbor's house. I dug a ditch in the middle of the night, hooked her up, ran it to my house!

When my dad was looking to get an antenna I did some searching online and found a website that was a big help. Don't remember the name but you entered your address and it would tell you what channels you can get by using what antenna. We went with a middle priced antenna and he got about all the ones it listed. Just do some looking and you can find plenty of info.

Try a set of rabbit ears and a converter box first to make sure the signals in your area aren't blocked by buildings. On a set of $1.00 yard sale rabbit ears alone we can pick up 5.1, 5.2, 10.1, 10.2, 11.1, 11.2, 11.3, 39.1, 68.1. With a 20 foot outdoor antenna we can get more stations. A word of advice, don't put rabbit ears on top of the TV or the converter box, the electronics interferes with the antenna signal, so will florescent lights.

Try these sites. Just type in your address or zip code to see which stations are available in your area and their signal strength.

Great information. Can't wait to try this. I am tired of paying DISH for 100 channels of informercial and a lost signal in inclement weather.

We have a converter box and live near South Greene High School. Ours varies with the wind. We normally have channels 2,11,19, and 39. We can move the antenna and get 5,10, and some other Blue Ridge channel. Two weeks ago, we picked up a Nashville channel with music. I think we get about 16 channels altogether. I'm not for sure if we could get more. We have lightning rods across our roof which interferes with reception at times. You might be able to get more channels than us.
