how about freedo0m to move about. to see and bask in the sun. to enjoy life and choose for themself. of couse the homeless dont need that stuff. 3 meals and a lumpy rag to sleep on is nirvana for them right? just because one is without home and hearth doesnt mean jail seems good to them.

you have a lot of nerve. some of the posters think its ok for the homeless to be locked up for simply being homeless. the staff and authorities apparently feel the same way. so i take up the matter in the favor of the homeless and you have the gull to make disparaging remarks to and about me. what about you christain, what would your selfrightous @ss do with the homeless? drag them to church and force feed them hypocracy? lie and tell them prayer is the answer to all their woes? people like you make me sick! go screw yourself.

There is a homeless shelter here in town that is funded by the local churches and a thrift store for those of you who are under the false impression that Greeneville does not have a homeless shelter. I don't know this woman or her circumstances but I can speculate that she either refuses to go to the shelter or has been asked to leave for breaking the rules. The shelter does have rules in place for the safety of all who stay there. I know for certain that the library does allow homeless people to come in and use the internet and etc. If she was asked to leave, she probably did something to cause it.

She could have been staying at the homeless shelter downtown. It is a requirement to be out of the shelter between the hours of 8-4pm. It's an effort to make those without jobs to look for work. Even if you receive a disability check or have retired and have an income you must still leave the premises during those hours. None if us know her situation. She could be going through a divorce or lost her husband and has an actual income, but needs a temporary place to stay. Even if you stay at the shelter, you are considered a sheltered homeless individual. So try not to get all on your high horses and be so quick to judge a person! Geez

I can't believe I'm the first one to ask, "Did they throw the book at her?" Pretty funny, for a clean joke.

Apparently you have never lived anywhere but here. Vagrants in public places like libraries and post offices are a huge problem in cities where they crowd in and panhandle, making the environment unfriendly and keeping people from using the facilities. The stench becomes overwhelming in the winter and most of these people, who need mental health care, scare children with their ranting and bizarre behavior. It is a sad situation for sure, but it can quickly become a real problem as word spreads through the vagrant community that Greeneville is a good place to hang. The police did the right thing. If this woman was looking for food, a warm bed, etc. she will certainly find it in jail. If you have such a bleeding heart, why don't you take her into your home and take care of her? Why doesn't one of our billion plus Greeneville churches post her bail and put her on a better track? Talk is cheap.

I know several of the "prominent" members of a couple of those churches downtown and I also know that when they have meetings to discuss the church finances it's more about how they can improve the "clubhouse" or what to fund for "club" activities and events, mission trips, etc. rather than what they can do to help this community.

I wasn't judging her or on a high horse but, I will judge you as an idiot. I said I don't know her situation but I will say if she was a resident of the shelter, the paper probably would have listed her as such instead of listing her only as "homeless"!

My post was an effort to inform those on here saying that we don't have a shelter that we certainly do and many of the churches they were running down in fact help the shelter by making contributions to fund the shelter.

Also, it appears you have a problem with the shelter sending people out to look for work. Hate to tell ya buddy but if you have mismanaged or even just had bad luck and can't afford a place to stay, you need to pick up at least a part time job to get yourself out of that hole you're in! That goes for those who are retired and disabled as well if they have the ability to work at all! Most people who are on disability or are retired are allowed to work part time to supplement their incomes. Since you screen name is "disabled" I'm sure you know this fact already!

Well you are mighty quick to judge again. I am with you, dork :) I was adding to what you are saying, in agreement, not bashing what you said or debating it. "Hate to tell you buddy", there aren't many places hiring 55+ plus year old people, when there is someone younger and stronger better fit to work. The job market available are for seniors in this county are limited at best. Then add a disability on that... it's more of a liability issue with more potential sick days. So then what? Looks like the library to me :) but we don't know what she was charged with trespassing. It would depend on the cause to determine if she was trespassing and how.

<quoted text>it IS our problem you idiot. when authorities overstep their authority and violate one's rights - even the homeless - we should all be concerned. unless the woman did something illegal, she has every right to be at the library and can not be banned legally. it is public property. the staff likely got their noses all bent out of shape to be exposed to the homeless and called police. it is they who should be arrested along with the rediculouse excuse for police we have here.
Why don't you march your nosey ass down to the Police Dept. and tell them to bring those homeless people to your house next time that happens. Let us know how that works out you chronic complainer.
