Many are donated to science (think universities). The nice thing is that they have the body for a predetermined amount of time and then the university pays for the burial.

We Never Thought About The Donations. With Weather As Cold As It Was We Was Figuring Alot Of Homeless People Died. I Doubt All Of Them Get Lucky And Get Buried Probly Just Ate By Buzzers Like They Said .

Some communities have pauper cemeteries & the local funeral homes are either on a contract fee or they take turns offering services for very basic burial. Some places cremate.

I work in healthcare and know for a FACT that Jeffers takes ALL the indigent cases. We called Kisers to come pick up a body ad they REFUSED because there was no family. We called both mayors an literally neither one of them knew what to do!!!!! Jeffers had taken the last few indigent cases and finally said enough! We are supposed to take turns, but Kisers and Doughtys refuses. Guess what else? Neither mayor knew what the plan was for this situation!!! Also, the health dept didn't know either. And body donation cannot be done without prior consent and good luck getting that from a homeless person.

I know that universities use many of these "bodies." It is way for them to contribute to society and it "earns" their burial expenses

Some of us are well-read enough to peruse newspapers of major cities to have answers. Since the economy downturn, many regions are having issues with having bodies they cannot dispose of pending release by a family member. Many families are not claiming bodies because they cannot afford burial. Accordingly, laws are being amended to handle the problem of unclaimed corpses and their disposal. I will sleep better knowing you deem me special.:)

Gives a new meaning to having someone for dinner. I might have to eat them, but that doesn't mean I have to be happy about it.
