Our country has not yet begun to recover because 80% of our economy is stagnated. This 80% is consumer spending. Consumers aren't spending because of high unemployment and they are scared to death to let go of their money of fear they might have a lot less in the near future. When people start spending, businesses will start hiring and tax revenues will start going up. Making government bigger, taxing businesses and taxpayers more will not increase consumer spending.
Some consumers aren't spending because they are "scared to death to let their money go", as you say "Pete" Some people have found themslves on the unemployment line and can't spend. Some people have been forced to take jobs that do not pay the wages they received before the recession, and have had to cut back on spending. Some people, especially seniors that once depended on interest income to suppliment their retirement, find the low interest rates disasterous for their bottom line. Some people, who are lucky enough to still have a decent job are paying more for their health insurance and haven't gotten much in the way of raises in the last ten years. Then there are the 40 some million Americans who live below the poverty level and have no disposable income TO spend. Their numbers have grown substantially since the economy collapsed.
I would like to have all of the above groups as customers. The trick is to get some money into their hands TO spend....because IF all but the first group you pointed to, had some they would spend it.
Cutting Federal spending in general will not accomplish that goal. SOME cuts can and should be made once we return to full employment, but NOT until we do. Others will not need to be IF we can get a sustainable recovery, because as you point out, tax revenues will increase once people start spending. Get some dollars into the hands of those potential consumers I mentioned above, and we solve most of our economic problems.....the question is HOW ???

Obama (well, probably somebody in his white house) DID come up with the sequester. That's fact.
Well, I'm sure that one of his Economic Advisors did, that's why a President has an Administration. He makes decisions about whether or not to try and implement what his Advisors present to him and which Plans to reject...that's what a President does! He doesn't personally formulate Plans himself! He's the Decision Maker about Plans that Others formulate, in their Field of expertise!

Which President said that? Some right-wing nutjob???
....Nah.....
One William Jefferson Clinton, 1996 State of the Union address
And who bloated the Government at an alarming rate, practically from the day he took Office? RONALD REAGAN! This is not the time of Reagan or Clinton and you CANNOT go back in time where our Gov't. is concerned and it's ridiculous to try!
Give up your Computer, Smart Phone, and anything else that you have acquired since Reagan was President...or even Clinton...and go back to the wages that you were making during Reagan's or Clinton's time and then, we'll talk! Until you do that, what you're advocating is simply ridicules!

No it is not 'ridicules'. There is NO reason to keep spending and spending money we do not have on 'projects' pushing our grandchildren's grandchildren into debt. The fact of the matter is that Obama does not care about 'the people'- all he wishes is control. Get the people so hooked on the gov't teet that, like addicts, they soon do NOT want to let go.

For example....

Also in 1996, Clinton signed into Law welfare reform. It introduced work requirements into the largest federal cash assistance welfare program, replacing the old Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) program with Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). T

he reform required able-bodied adults to work, prepare for work, or look for work in order to receive benefits. Though the law received much criticism from the left, it worked: Stagnant welfare rolls decreased by half within five years of the law’s implementation, employment among low-income Americans soared, and child poverty rates plummeted.

Even though the work requirements have been a success, liberals have attempted to water them down. Then, last summer, the Obama Administration attempted to completely eliminate them.

You see, somebody who's down on their luck and has to get on welfare...shouldn't have to actually WORK!!! Work is for those evil people.

He is president. However, he is no expert - except at continually ruining the economy with socialist and Keynesian economic follies.

Well, usually the way potential consumers get dollars into their hands is by having what Uncle Joe Biden called a three letter word: J-O-B-S....

Seeing as it is spring - and summer is right around the corner...perhaps the Obama/Biden 'Recovery Summer-2010' will get into full swing! Heck -$787 Billion 'stimulus' was spent - where are the j-o-b-s?

Which came first the chicken or the egg ? Jobs are produced by demand for goods or services...the demand is produced by disposable income, the lack of which I was lamenting in my post.

GREAT NEWS!

Sen. Dianne Feinstein emerged from a closed-door meeting with Majority Leader Harry Reid on Monday — but her ban on assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines didn’t.

Mr. Reid turned down her attempt to bring her ban on 157 different weapons and ammunition clips aboard the Democratic Party’s comprehensive gun bill.

Her bill instead will have to go forth separately or as an amendment — and that means it’s probably not going anywhere.
