Oh no...there was no voter fraud...

The Obama/Biden lawn sign remains proudly planted in front of Melowese Richardson's Cincinnati home, three months after the presidential election.

It seems that President Obama has an especially ardent supporter in the veteran Ohio poll worker.

Richardson told a local television station earlier this month that she voted twice for Obama last November. She cast an absentee ballot and then voted at the polls as well.

"Yes, I voted twice," Richardson told WCPO-TV. "I, after registering thousands of people, certainly wanted my vote to count, so I voted. I voted at the polls."

Authorities are also investigating if she voted in the names of four other people, too, for a total of six votes in the 2012 presidential election.

"I'll fight it for Mr. Obama and for Mr. Obama's right to sit as president of the United States," Richardson vowed when asked about the voter fraud investigation that is now underway.

Richardson is one of 19 people suspected of illegal voting by the Hamilton County Board of Elections in the last election.

Just so you know, that bill was passed because in the last 4 years or so, it is the workers railroading the employers. Employees pretending to strain their back get pain pills, 6 months of staying at home while getting paid, all compliments of the workman's comp insurance company. And who foots the bill? The employer. For example, my workman's comp insurance tripled last year due to 2 workman's comp scammers. The workman's comp system actually works, there is no need for lawsuits except for the ones who take advantage of the system. This happens every day, and in my business, has happened three times in the last year. Here are some of the statements I have heard from employees over the past six months:
1. Can you lay me off, I would rather stay home and just get unemployment.
2. One employee gets his tax return and promptly gets a new TV and car stereo. Two weeks later, the transmission in his car goes out. He then comes to me and says he needs a raise to fix his car so that he can get to work.
3. One employee says he has a strained back. Goes to the doctor, gets pain pills and 6 weeks off with pay. He stretches that 6 weeks into one year by telling the doctor he can't sleep at night and the pain is killing him still. Workman's Comp insurance company then settles with him for $15,000 and then he takes a job doing landscaping work digging sprinkler ditches. I guess a miracle happened and he got cured overnight.
4. One employee has a wreck on a motorcycle and then comes to work early before anyone gets there and says he fell in the parking lot. He gets 6 months off with pay, numerous doctors visits for a bad shoulder, then comes back to work and brags about what he did. The stupid insurance company did nothing even though the employee admitted it. My bill doubled due to that one instance.
On and on and on ....
Now do you get why that bill passed?
Pete, your examples are very interesting.
1.This should be a easy one in Tn., as I don't think you have a Union to deal with. I just wonder why after this employee made this statement you didn't transfer him to a lower paying job, or send him far away to work(to collect his/her paycheck). Or just keep an eye on him/her until you found something you could easily fire him for.
2.Just say no. It's his responsibility to get to work, on time or fire him on the spot.(getting to work on time is part of his job)
3.I believe this would involve a x-ray/MRI for a Doctor to prescribe; physical therapy and pain meds. Then if he settles for $15,000 and starts to dig trenches, I'd would advise workmans comp. They do have employees that go out and investigate and take pictures of this type of scam.......that hurts all of us. Plus it puts the spot light on the doctor who was part of this scam. But Pete you have to speak up, if you have not already.
4. Have one of your managers go out with the employee and explain just exactly what happened. Then go to the police dept. and look for a accident report. In the mean time, have the employee clean up the parking lot day after day,(to make it safe) by hand. If you look out the window and you see him not doing his job, that you are paying him to do.......fire him on the spot.

And so Pete, here we go again... The utopian-istic view of how to run a business.. I've seen the exact same thing happen in small business... two separate companys over the course of 20 years... one involved a manufacturing company who had a spray paint booth.. and an employee who filed a bogus charge about getting sick because of lead poisoning in the paint... of course, the MSDS sheets were verified that there was NO lead in the paint (mid 1980's) and that the paint booth was adequately ventilated and that proper ventilation equipment was provided to the painter... SO company exonerated, right??? um... NO... employee received pay through workers compensation for 9 months WHILE this was being disputed... insurance company opted to pay a settlement of $10,000.00 to this ex-employee because it was CHEAPER than to hirer an attorney to fight this case.... and workers comp rates doubled...
2nd instance involved a retail company who had delivery men... one man filed for worker's comp saying he strained his back while lifting furniture... luckily, in this instance, the employee ran his mouth to a dozen other employees about how while playing softball over the weekend, he had slid into third base and really "messed up" his back... but had he not been so reckless, who know what that would have cost this company...
TRUE stories.. and many small business just do not have the ability to hire more and more and more employees to watch others who would take advantage of a VERY VERY broken system...

With all due respect Dunlapian, managing our staff is not as idealistic as what you depict. First, you can't simple "fire them on the spot." These days, almost everyone gets unemployment. The only situation I have seen where an employee did not receive unemployment was when they quit. An employee can slap their supervisor in the face and get unemployment. I had an employee show up to work drunk twice, and he still got unemployment. When an employee gets fired and receives unemployment, guess who gets to pay the bill? Our FUTA and SUTA unemployment multipliers get raised for every ex-employee on unemployment. In short, yes, I can fire them, but I have to pay the cost.

1. Regarding your answer to this question, this employee already had the lowest paying job we have. There is nowhere to transfer that person to and he had actually done nothing to get fired. I pointed out this example to show you some people's mindset.

2. In this situation, I did exactly what you suggested, I said no. Again, this was an illustration of some employees' mindsets.

3. This is where I can see that you don't have a lot of experience working with workman's comp insurance providers. They are part of the problem. They are not going to send anyone out to investigate. Trust me, I have asked. It is up to me to prove they are scamming the system. Our insurance company refused to spend the money to investigate. In fact, I have had three separate insurance companies refuse to investigate. I actually spoke to the doctor who saw this employee over the course of a year. He said his hands were tied because he can only go by what the employee tells him. In other words, he is taking the word of a scammer. The end result, my company had to foot the bill.

4. There was no accident report. The employee wrecked on his motorcycle while dirt bike riding and never reported it. Again, you can't simply fire someone unless you are ready to pay the increased SUTA and FUTA costs.

The only resolution that I have done that has actually worked is to make their life miserable while still employed to the point they actually quit. I do this by getting them to pull weeds in the middle of the summer, work with someone they don't like, make them come in early, etc. However, sometimes that makes them madder and leads to more false claims.

If you have any solution that I haven't thought of to this, I am more than willing to listen.
