Well well well, just got home from work and can't believe my eyes. I sure won't get a $16,000 bonus when I retire. I believe they do give out some kind of cheap plaque though. Is that what our property tax increase was all about. Damn!

The way it works where I am employed is if you have the money at the end of every quarter employees get a bonus if you don't have the money, no bonus. Are you listening Director Jones? Maybe this idea would encourage balancing the budget and keeping an eye on how you spend the tax payers money.

sounds like the " directors" don't want the public to know what's going on in the discussions going on in some of these meetings. Trying to even shut board members out of there. Wonder what they don' want the public to know is being discussed. Could it be things like a bonus that's as big as some people's salary they had to work all year for? Unbelievable! The article said something about retires getting their insurance paid for until they got Medicare. My gosh I know some teachers that have retired at 54 and 55. Does that mean we are paying for some people's insurance for maybe ten years? If they had to keep paying for their insurance like I do they couldn't retire so early education is the place to steer our children folks.

It's really easy to spend other people's money. That's the tragic flaw of government, no matter local, state or federal level.

The board made this decision to make a payout years ago. They made the bed, now sleep in it.

Hey, maybe they can let the teachers work a 32 hour work week and pay them for 40 hours like some county waste dept employees get to do.

Does getting this " bonus" when someone as young as 55 gets paid that year mean they could make over 100,000, especially if they are in an administrative position? Would be interesting to get the actual amounts of all people who've retired the last five years . Board members and the so called contract people that retired and came back. Seems they've opened a can of worms. This shocks me. We wonder what's wrong with education.? I don't blame the teachers. It's the people who made the deals at the top. They should have to explain why they did this. Mr. Jones says in the paper this has been happening a long time. Trying to blame someone else. Well this board could choose to differently if they wanted to. If the money ain't there don't do it! That money could be spent to hire more teachers for the children in school now. Not go to people leaving. I hope we can get more information about all this.

The real sad part is the logic that by hiring a new teacher at a lower salary you are recouping the cost. You have still spent the money. And you would have hired that teacher whether the bonus was given or not. You aren't recouping anything you are just spending the money on something else.

Now there's some logic??? No if the money isn't there a few more teachers will not be hired at a lower salary or any salary cause they used any excess (if that's possible these days)on bonuses. You must have gone to county schools.

so true. Just think they could hire 7 or 8 more math science or English teachers to work with the kids still in school instead of giving ithe money to people who won't be working for the system anymore. If you want to do something for the kids, spend the money on them. Cut the pupil- teacher ratio down!

I don't think you understood my comment. A teacher retires and they have to replace that teacher. Their thought is that by hiring a teacher at a lower salary they can give the bonus and break even in a couple of years. It isn't about excess. They are borrowing agains future savings. If they hire a teacher at $10,000 less per year than the retiring teacher they are saying that in 3 years or so they will break even and then be in the black. But not giving the bonus would have put them in the black immediately. Let me know if I need to explain it any more for you. And no I did not graduate from a county school. With your pompous attitude I can guess where you graduated from.

There is a bargaining body between teachers and the Greene County Board of Education. This is true for most systems. There must be some professional incentives to keep teachers within the system. If there weren't all teachers would go to another system where their salaries would be higher and most surrounding systems do pay more than Greene County. Maybe some unions are needed in this great right to work state so that employees are treated more fairly and like people instead of like beasts of burden. However, our governor and legislators are seriously trying to make sure that doesn't happen.

I think most surrounding counties have enough teachers to support their own schools. I really don't think we'd lose too many teachers without this bonus. The same can be said about all jobs in our surrounding counties. Most other counties seem to pay more than Greene county. I'll agree with what the one lady said at the meeting. They have a pretty decent retirement without the bonus.

Funny, they said all our teachers would go to different counties / schools if we didn't cough up extra money here in Jeff County. We are on the block schedule which means the teachers only work a 6 hour day, if that. So the 32 hour work week is a lot closer than we think. Now has anybody studied the student / teacher ratio ? It will probably shock the hell out of you. Then add in the assistants and you will begin to cry. And don't even look at the cost of cafeterias, man them kids must be eating good ! And 74% are eating free in our county. Then look at the half empty busses. And paying their insurance from 55 to 65 ? Must be nice. I really think they are not overpaid, but looking at the numbers, it doesn't look as though they are actually overworked either.

must be an educated idiot....you're not worth what you think you are. You go republicans....break this cycle of a few good old boys holding education back. More transparency on how the money is spent.

Actually, if you look into it you will find that Greene County pays as well or better than some of the surrounding county systems. For example, Greene pays better than Sullivan. I think Greene pays better than either Hawkins or Washington or maybe both. Hamblen pays well.
