My 12 yr old daughter passes out randomly. We have done so many tests and seen a heart Dr everything comes back normal. The only thing they have told us is that her body is not holding onto salt and water, and to up her intake of salt and water. This is so scary and if anyone has any advice plz give it.

First of all I am not looking for sympathy from anyone. I have taken her to her pediatrician and to a specialist. We have done so much lab work and different test it's unimaginable. After doing all the above the only answer i have gotten was to up her intake of salt and water which we have done.(she still passes out) So after doing all the above things and researching endlessly i just thought someone out there may of experienced the same issues and could give some input to this scary situation. What was I thinking? Possibly that this a forum of just ordinary ppl that may just of been through this and could have advice of what it may possibly be. Because in all reality it seems like we are just running from dr to dr to specialist to lab back to dr to do guess work thats just not working. If i offended ppl by asking im sorry but i know there is an answer to whats going on and will not stop until my daughter is back to normal health.

You're getting some crazy advice. Salt is a diuretic. It gets rid of water. She's probably dehydrated. The body's cells work on what is referred to as the sodium-potassium pump. The sodium balance must be off-set by potassium for the cells to function properly. If not, guess what? You'll pass out from fatigue. Stop giving her salt and water. Absolutely no salt. I'll bet her urinary output is low and yellow as Tigger. Sounds like all you're doing is giving her some kidney stones. Give her an electrolye replacement drink, instead. Don't overkill. 1 cup of water per cup of Gator-Ade or Squencher. There are several on the market. Or you can dilute fruit juices. I'd like to know who gave you this advice. He's a quack.

My sister (who is 50ish) has periodically passed out all of her life.. Me and my daughter (who is 35) also pass out quite easily, although not to the extent of your daughter and my sister. Like your daughter, the doctors could never ever find out a problem with any of us. I hope you can find some answers however, I'm only throwing this out just in case you aren't able to determine a cause so it might not worry you so much. Pain usually causes me and my daughter to pass right out...My sister would pass out anywhere... I think hers was stress personally. Shrugs. Good luck in your search.

@ Alyagotado thank you ill try the electrolyte replacement drink and gatorade. As far as urinary output ill keep an eye on that as well, just to see if it is "normal". As far as which dr gave the direction to up the salt, he also put her on a medicine fludrocortisone, which is a steroid, to help her body maintain the proper balance of water and minerals. It has not slowed the passing out down, it has actually increased. Id also hate to put his name on here, he is a pediatrician cardiologist in jc. Thanks again for some sincere advice

Have you notice any patterns to the passing out? Take note of the clothing she is wearing. There is a vein that runs through the neck that when compressed can cause passing out. This is the basis for the passing out game that kids play. See if she has on any restrictive item around her neck (collared shirt, tight necklace, scarf). I had a basketball coach in high school that would randomly pass out. Turned out his shirt and tie were to restrictive.

thank you your sister and my daughter sound very familiar in What's going on. It scares me so bad cause it is so sudden and I worry she will get hurt from falling, she hits the ground so quickly. Stress can cause our bodies to do so many strange things and the stress of being a teen these days are overwhelming in itself. So who knows it could be stress, as she is also a worrier and an over achiever.

Gatorade isn't very good in kids... Use pedialite and if its a salt loss.. They do make a Salt tablet... Might want to watch that though, because her salt intake doesn't need to get to high either...

My mother has done this all her life. The drs said some people are more prone, no reason, no health problems, they just do. One possible thing could be if her pants are too tight...lots of girls wear clothing too tight she not getting proper circulation.

A lot of people report becoming light-headed upon standing quickly. I've done this off and on all my life. I don't pass out, but I have to brace myself and wait for it to pass. I've always thought it had something to do with low blood pressure. But that's my armchair-physician coming out.

I have this condition and so does my son. Its called syncope. Take your child to a neurologist it could be epilepsy. If the med the Dr gave her is making it worse tell them asap. Salt will dehydrate the body. Does she feel the spells comin on? My son an I both feel them we get dizzy followed by a sudden feel of burning up an my speech slurs followed by passing out. The hospital discovered my blood sugar and blood pressure both drop significantly. I suggest keeping a journal of the episodes to show the Dr. Good luck

Well, how about that? I guess some people on here give a damn after all. I wish you well, as I'm sure some of these kind folks do, as well. Good luck, worried mom.

You mentioned that your daughter is 12. I am wondering if she has maybe recently started having her period. If so, she could be anemic. She might need an iron supplement. I agree about the Pedialyte. That would probably be better than a sports drink at her age. Any way, I hope you can get some good answers and that she feels better soon. I know it is scary for both of you.

I passed out frequently as a teenager. Though no doctors could really offer an answer, over the years I noticed the occurances often happened during my menstrual cycle or when I had PMS. My mom took me to see her gynecologist and though nothing was resolved, he did say hormonal imbalance could cause fainting. Given your daughter's age, you might consider seeing a gynecologist or atleast bring up the hormone angle with your child's regular doctor. I stopped passing out after my high school years. I started using birth control about that same time. It could be a coincidence, or not?
Hope you find some answers. I would definitely scour the internet, beyond local Topix. It's amazing how much information you can find and it will give you ammunition as you continue to see doctors and try to figure it out.
This my sound crazy, but have you considered emailing someone like Dr. Oz, Christiane Northrup or the panel on the show The Doctors? These sources are bound to be well-read, innovative and progressive in their thinking. They may be able to help more than the run of the mill doctors you encounter locally.
just sayin

I didn't read all the posts but from the lil bit I got from it I can say this. When I was about ur daughters age my friend and I decided we was "fat" so we started skipping meals. My friend cut out food almost completly. She started passing out and the reason was lack of nutrients and dehydration. I'm no Dr. But u could b looking at the start of an eating disorder. A lot of kids go through a stage like this in their early teens. Check out her eating habits. And believe me she can hide it well. I know I did.

I am no doctor. Most, if not all, posters are not doctors. My advice would be to get a second and even a third opinion from... a doctor, instead of listening to a bunch of farmers and waitresses that are certain to have the answer you are looking for...
