Also I was trying to point out that it's kinda ridiculous to expect people who make $31,000 a year to have to pay more in taxes to increase someone's pay that is making $47,000. You eventually can't squeeze anymore out of the turnip. But, I know this common sense approach may make your head hurt. As far as saying nobody would know how to use their brain unless a teacher taught them is arrogant. There haven't always been professional teachers, and civilization made it. Teachers are great, I didn't say otherwise. But, so is every other worker. It takes everybody to make this world work. It would be a pretty dull place if we didn't have pretty paper to wrap our gifts in or we couldn't send a nice card to make someone's day. We wouldn't be able to travel far without our autos if someone didn't make those at a factory, or a mechanic didn't fix it, or yes if a truck didn't bring us fuel. My job doesn't make teachers have to pay more in property taxes for my salary or ha, what few benefits I get. Some of my best friends are teachers and they hate all that's gone on. They just want to do their jobs. They tell me they realize that it's tough for everybody right now. I appreciate that.

<quoted text>You've missed the whole point! Yes, there are teachers, former educators, and family members of teachers on the County Commission, and yes, they do have a conflict of interest everytime they vote on the school budget if they have a direct or indirect interest from that vote. That's why they go through the farce of reading a conflict of interest statement and then vote themselves or their family members a raise or increase in benefits. I for one don't think anyone should be able to run for office or at least be able to vote on any issue that benefits them. That's crazy! I've been to those meetings, 2/3 of the members read those statements many times before a vote. Then they go ahead and vote yes, with the exception of Ted Hensley, who voted no on the property tax increase that would have given his wife a nice raise and increase in benefits. But he took the high road and listened to his constituents. I would trust the 7 to take care of the people. I pray the other 12 get voted out of office next time. They work for the people not themselves!!
Nope, didn't miss the point at all. We were discussing an Attorney General's opinion about whether or not a county commission member can have a beneficial contract with the school board. The opinion was no. I take it the county commission member who had the bus service contract lost the contract, but under that opinion so would all teachers and county employees who have work contracts with the school board. Thanks for bringing up Ted Hensley's conflict under that opinion. Marriage is a beneficial contract. Mr. Hensley every time he votes on the school budget is indirectly voting on and indirectly receiving benefit from his vote on appropriation. He is in the exact same boat as Tim White. SURPRISED????? I guess that is what Tim White meant when he said people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. Alan Broyles and the Idiot 7 do not know what they have done because SOMEBODY can now mention at every county meeting that someone on the commission has conflict or ethics violation even though they are as frivilous as Tim's and Ted's but the county would be obligated to spend thousands of dollars on investigating them. It's what comes from vigilante manufacturing of law. Remember it was Alan Broyles who said he had an obligation to bring before the commission and have an investigation anytime SOMEBODY brings that to his attention within his hearing distance. He needs to go and take the Idiot 7 with him before he bankrupts the county in needless litigation and investigations.

Tim, you need to get back on your tractor and stay off the computer. Your line of reasoning is getting a little old and doesn't jive with the facts as you have twisted it all in your own selfish favor.

<quoted text>Thanks for this opinion because it sort of applies to Alan Broyles and the Idiot 7. Again the Attorney General is placing into law what is not written and in this case it would be very dangerous. School teachers are under contract with the school board, this opinion would deny them the right to sit on county commission. Is Alan Broyles and the Idiot 7 saying Tim White's company cannot have a contract with the school board but that teachers on county commission can have a contract with the school board? Talk about the kettle calling the pot black in spades!!!!!!
The law provides exemptions for actual county employees.

"(c)(1) Any member of a local governing body of a county or a municipality who is also an employee of such county or municipality and whose employment predates the member's initial election or appointment to the governing body of the county or municipality may vote on matters in which the member has a conflict of interest if the member informs the governing body immediately prior to the vote as follows: "Because I am an employee of (name of governmental unit), I have a conflict of interest in the proposal about to be voted. However, I declare that my argument and my vote answer only to my conscience and to my obligation to my constituents and the citizens this body represents." The vote of any such member having a conflict of interest who does not so inform the governing body of such conflict shall be void if challenged in a timely manner. As used in this subdivision (c)(1), "timely manner" means during the same meeting at which the vote was cast and prior to the transaction of any further business by the body.

(2) Any member of a local governing body of a county or a municipality who is also an employee of such county or municipality and whose employment began on or after the date on which the member was initially elected or appointed to serve on the governing body of the county or municipality shall not vote on matters in which the member has a conflict of interest."

Seems if any elected official would just not vote when there is a conflict of interest that would take care of the problem. Doesn't matter if that only leaves 3 or 4 people. That's the way the vote should go.

I want fair taxation. I don't mind for business owners to make more money than I do, I wouldn't be a Owner for anything. Too many headaches for me. Without people who take risks in business, the working man wouldn't have a job. My understanding is that the top 2% pay 50% of the taxes, and 50% of people don't pay any taxes. I do think tax loopholes for the wealthy should be taken away. It wouldn't hurt my feelings if the freeloaders got off their duff and contributed SOMETHING...Food stamps have doubled the last 4 years.

So, what you are saying is Tim White did not have to declare a conflict of interest because he is not a county employee. Circles within circles, exceptions within exceptions. Ted Hensley if indeed his wife has a contract with the school board would be in the same boat as Tim White under the attorney general's ruling, thus White would lose his contract and Hensley's wife would lose her contract. I imagine there were a multitude of exceptions out there which would have protected White, but, unfortunately the lawyer obtained by Alan Broyles in his attempt to manufacture law did not do much research into that part of it.

He has acted as accuser and judge a conflict of interest way beyond anything Commissioner White came close to. His removal could only help the county to somehow regain its composure. He should resign but he is too ignorant and stupid to do so.
You could say the exact same about White. He is very combative.

There are exceptions for commissioners who are county employees, not commissioners whose business contracts with the county. A county commissioner CANNOT contract with the county to do work. It is very simple. If you look at yesterday's paper, it says that the results of the bid were made public on February 16. The commissioner had the low bid. February 21, five days later, the county commission voted to appropriate funds to pay for the work in regards to the February 16 bid. The commissioner voted yes. It was public knowledge who the low bidder was when they voted. On February 23, the county school board awarded the contract.

You must not read the paper. I also went to Central office during the tax mess and got some information. The public has the right to ask for any information on the budget they want. No one persons job is more important than another. You sure missed the point if that's what you got from my post. The garbage collector is as important as a teacher, dr., lawyer or anyone else. That's the problem with some educators, they think their job is more important than anyone else's, it's not. ONe thing I've learned from this mess is to ask questions. It's the taxpayers money.
You talk out both sides of your mouth. Earlier you went on and on about what all doctors do and how they earn their pay. You might want to stop while your ahead.

You're very confused, or stupid (only you know which). I didn't say anything about drs pay. You did! You missed the whole point of my post. I don't have to talk out of both sides of my mouth. I'll tell it like it is the first time. Enjoy your holidays off while some of us have to go to work. When "we" the taxpayers aren't writing your check, then I could care less what you make. Hope you find your "gotcha" person. Obviously you see them behind every post.... Hate to break it to you but there are obviously other people on here who feel the same way I do. Imagine that, more than one person has a problem with their taxes going up to make your paycheck bigger. So YOU might want to quit while you're ahead....

Decided you weren't a teacher. You left out "of" in the first sentence. You spelled "you're" wrong too. Hmmm. Now you got me looking behind every post for that spook......I don't pretend to be an english major...... Gosh folks, I gotta go. Have fun without me.
